Chapter 15: The Man Behind the Lies
The message stayed on the folder for several seconds.
Nobody touched it.
Because everyone understood.
Daniel wasn't running anymore.
He was playing with us.
My father picked up the folder carefully.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Bank records.
Everything connected to Daniel.
But one page was different.
A handwritten note.
My mother took it.
Her hands shook as she read.
"What does it say?""
She didn't answer.
"Mom?""
She looked at me.
"It's from Daniel.""
My stomach tightened.
"What does he want?""
She handed me the note.
The handwriting was neat.
Almost polite.
*You always thought the truth would set you free.*
*But the truth only matters when people believe it.*
*Ask Emma why her father chose silence.*
I looked at my father.
His face changed.
Again.
Like there was another secret waiting.
"No.""
My voice was quiet.
"No more.""
Everyone looked at me.
"I am done discovering my life one secret at a time.""
I turned to Dad.
"Tell me everything.""
He sat down.
This time, he didn't argue.
"I met Daniel before your mother disappeared.""
My mother's expression changed.
"What?""
Dad looked ashamed.
"He approached me.""
"Why?""
"He said he could help me protect my family.""
I laughed bitterly.
"By destroying it?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
The honesty hurt.
"He told me your mother was dangerous.""
My mother stared at him.
"And you believed him.""
"I was scared.""
She looked away.
Dad continued.
"After the crash, Daniel told me your mother had left voluntarily.""
My heart tightened.
"You believed that?""
"I wanted to.""
The words landed harder than anything else.
Because sometimes the truth wasn't that someone didn't know.
Sometimes they knew exactly enough.
"Where were you the night she disappeared?""
Dad went silent.
I already knew the answer would hurt.
"I was at Daniel's office.""
My mother closed her eyes.
"Why?""
"Because he told me he had proof.""
"Proof of what?""
Dad looked at her.
"That you were planning to leave with Emma.""
My mother's face broke.
"He made you choose.""
Dad nodded.
"And I chose wrong.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily quietly asked:
"What about Nicole?""
Everyone looked at her.
She was standing in the doorway.
Holding something.
A small flash drive.
"What's that?""
She looked nervous.
"I found it in the laptop.""
My father took it.
"We should check it.""
The video loaded.
A recording.
Daniel's voice.
But this time...
He wasn't talking to Nicole.
He was talking to my father.
"Marcus, if you're watching this, it means you finally grew a conscience.""
My father went pale.
The video continued.
"I knew you would eventually try to fix your mistake.""
Daniel smiled at the camera.
"But you can't.""
A pause.
Then:
"Because Emma isn't your biggest secret.""
My heart stopped.
The screen flickered.
Daniel leaned closer.
"There is one person who knows the entire truth.""
The video cut briefly.
Then another person appeared.
Someone sitting beside Daniel.
Someone we never expected.
My mother gasped.
"No.""
I looked at her.
"Who is it?""
She couldn't answer.
Because she knew.
The person on the screen looked directly into the camera.
And said:
"Emma, if you're watching this, I'm sorry.""
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized the voice.
It was someone who had been protecting me my entire life.
Someone I never questioned.
Someone who had always said they loved me.
The video continued.
"I should have told you years ago.""
The person leaned forward.
May you like
And the final words before the screen went black were:
"Your real father is not Marcus.""
