Chapter 8: The Document With My Name On It
Nobody moved.
Vanessa’s mother placed the folder on the table.
The sound was quiet.
But it felt louder than shouting.
My name was written across it.
In black ink.
*Emily Parker.*
I stared at it.
“What is that?””
Her mother didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at Vanessa.
“You should have handled this before it got this far.””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“I tried.””
“No, you panicked.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Someone explain.””
Vanessa’s mother looked at him.
“You’re angry because you think Vanessa betrayed you.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“She did.””
“She made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
He pointed toward the folder.
“What is that?””
Her mother sighed.
“Protection.””
I laughed quietly.
Nobody looked at me.
Because everyone knew that word meant something different when she said it.
Protection for them.
Not me.
I reached for the folder.
Vanessa grabbed my wrist.
“Wait.””
I pulled away.
“Don’t touch me.””
Her face fell.
That hurt her.
Good.
Because I was tired of being the only person who felt pain.
I opened the folder.
The first page was a legal document.
My name.
My signature line.
And several paragraphs I didn’t understand.
Daniel took a step closer.
“What is it?””
I kept reading.
Then I saw the words.
*Transfer of financial responsibility.*
My hands started shaking.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa’s mother crossed her arms.
“Nothing has been done.””
“Yet,” Daniel said.
She looked at him.
“You’re making this dramatic.””
I looked up.
“You wanted me to sign something that makes me responsible for their debt?””
Nobody answered.
Because I was right.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Is this why you borrowed money from her?””
Vanessa cried.
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
I stared at her.
“You didn’t know?””
Her mother interrupted.
“Emily, you need to understand something. Family helps family.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“Family doesn’t trick family.””
The room went silent.
Ryan looked away.
Even he seemed uncomfortable.
Her mother’s expression hardened.
“You’ve always been difficult.””
That sentence surprised me.
Not because it hurt.
Because it finally freed me.
For years, I had tried to be easier to love.
Quieter.
More understanding.
Less demanding.
But nothing was ever enough.
Because the problem was never that I was too much.
It was that they wanted me to be less.
Daniel picked up the document.
“I’m calling a lawyer.””
Vanessa immediately looked terrified.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Daniel, please.””
He looked at her.
“I need to know if this was illegal.””
Vanessa’s mother stepped forward.
“Don’t threaten my daughter.””
Daniel laughed.
“I’m not threatening anyone.””
He looked at the folder.
“I’m protecting myself.””
Then he looked at me.
“And her.””
I didn’t know what to say.
For the first time in a long time, someone stood beside me without asking what I had done to deserve it.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
I looked down.
A message from an unknown number.
My heart stopped when I read it.
*You need to leave before they find out what I know.*
I looked at Ryan.
He was already staring at my phone.
“How did you get that message?”” Daniel asked.
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Then another message appeared.
This one had a photo attached.
A photo of Vanessa.
Standing outside a bank.
The date was three days before she asked me for money.
And behind her was someone I recognized.
Someone who shouldn’t have been there.
Someone who changed everything.
May you like
Because the person in the photo was not Ryan.
It was Daniel’s father.
