Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Wedding Smile
Vanessa didn’t hand Daniel her phone.
She held it against her chest like it was the only thing keeping her from falling apart.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”” she asked.
Daniel’s expression didn’t change.
“Because you just went from angry to terrified in three seconds.””
“I’m not terrified.””
“Then unlock your phone.””
The wind moved through the trees behind us. Somewhere near the front of the estate, guests were beginning to wake up. I could hear distant voices, footsteps, the clinking of plates being prepared for breakfast.
But in that moment, it felt like the entire world had narrowed down to the three of us.
Vanessa shook her head.
“This is insane.””
Daniel let out a quiet breath.
“No. What’s insane is that I found out my future wife pushed her injured sister into a pool, then somehow I’m the one being accused of overreacting.””
Her eyes flashed.
“You’re twisting everything.””
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
She pointed at me.
“Emily has always been good at making people feel sorry for her.””
I felt my face go numb.
Even after everything.
Even after the pain.
She was still trying to rewrite reality.
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said something that made her expression change.
“Tell me why you told me your sister was unstable.””
Vanessa froze.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
I looked between them.
Daniel continued.
“You told me Emily had a habit of exaggerating injuries. You told me not to believe everything she said because she liked attention.””
My heart sank.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Because it’s true.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. It’s what you wanted me to believe.””
The silence afterward was sharp.
I didn’t know what hurt more—the fact that Vanessa had lied or the fact that Daniel had believed her.
“She had surgery,” Daniel said.
“She had months of recovery. And somehow, every time she needed help, you made her sound like a burden.””
Vanessa looked away.
“She’s always been dramatic.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
All those years.
All those moments where I questioned myself.
Maybe I wasn’t too sensitive.
Maybe I had just been listening to the wrong person for too long.
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily, can I ask you something?””
I nodded.
“Did she ever ask you for money recently?””
My stomach tightened.
I hesitated.
Then I remembered.
Two months earlier, Vanessa had called me crying.
She said she was overwhelmed.
She said wedding expenses had gone over budget.
She said she only needed help “for a little while.””
I had transferred money from my savings.
Not because I wanted to.
Because she was my sister.
“Yes,” I whispered.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“How much?””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because I need to know.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, stop.””
But he ignored her.
“Emily.””
I swallowed.
“Eight thousand dollars.””
The color disappeared from his face.
Vanessa immediately started talking.
“That wasn’t like that.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Then explain.””
“It was for wedding expenses.””
“Then why did your mother text you that I found out about the money?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
And that was the answer.
Daniel reached for his phone.
“I saw the bank notifications yesterday.””
My eyebrows lifted.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“I checked our shared wedding account because I was confused about some charges.””
Vanessa’s voice became smaller.
“Daniel…”
He continued.
“There were several payments I didn’t recognize.””
Nobody moved.
“I thought maybe it was mistakes from vendors.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“But they weren’t.””
She looked down.
“They were transfers.””
“To where?”” Daniel asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Finally, she whispered.
“My mother needed help.””
Daniel laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“Your mother needed help?””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
Another pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“Debt.””
I watched Daniel’s face.
He looked exhausted.
Not angry anymore.
Just disappointed.
“How much?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel looked at me.
“She borrowed from you.””
It wasn’t a question.
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Vanessa immediately stepped toward me.
“Emily, don’t make this worse.””
I stared at her.
“Make what worse?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You know how Mom is. You know she struggles.””
I shook my head.
“No. I know you asked me for money because you said you needed help with your wedding.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“It was still for family.””
“No,” Daniel said quietly.
“It was for you.””
Everyone went silent.
Then Daniel unlocked his phone.
“I canceled the honeymoon because of what happened last night.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“But now I’m realizing the pool wasn’t the problem.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“The problem is that I don’t know who I’m marrying.””
And before anyone could respond, another notification appeared on his phone.
He looked down.
His expression changed instantly.
“What?”” Vanessa asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He just turned the screen toward us.
It was a message from the wedding planner.
A message that revealed someone had changed the guest list without permission.
May you like
And the person added to the wedding weekend wasn’t a family member.
It was someone Vanessa had sworn she hadn’t spoken to in years.
