Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much
Ryan walked into the room like he owned it.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not his expensive clothes.
Not the confident smile.
The way he moved.
Like every person around him was already under his control.
Vanessa stood up immediately.
“Ryan, you shouldn’t be here.””
He laughed softly.
“Funny. You were the one who invited me.””
Daniel stepped into the room.
“Start explaining.””
Ryan looked at him.
Then smiled.
“You really have no idea, do you?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Careful.””
Ryan raised his hands.
“I’m not here to fight.””
“Then why are you here?””
Ryan looked at Vanessa.
“To stop her from pretending.””
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“Leave.””
“No.””
The single word changed the atmosphere.
Ryan reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“What is that?””
“Insurance.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Against what?””
Ryan placed the envelope on the table.
“Against her lying.””
Nobody moved.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What’s inside?””
She whispered:
“Don’t.””
Ryan smiled.
“Go ahead.””
I opened it.
Inside were printed screenshots.
Messages.
Bank transfers.
Photos.
My hands went cold.
The first message was from Vanessa.
*I just need Daniel to marry me first. After that, everything will be easier.*
The second one was worse.
*Emily is still guilty about saying no to me before. She’ll help if I push the right buttons.*
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“It’s not what it looks like.””
Daniel took the papers from my hand.
He read silently.
The longer he looked, the quieter he became.
Ryan leaned against the wall.
“She’s been planning this wedding like a business deal.””
“Shut up,” Vanessa snapped.
Ryan ignored her.
“She needed Daniel because he had money, connections, and a clean reputation.””
Daniel looked up.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“Is it true?””
She didn’t answer.
And again, silence answered for her.
I looked at Ryan.
“Why are you showing us this?””
His expression changed.
For the first time, he looked less like a villain and more like someone desperate.
“Because Vanessa betrayed me.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Now you’re the victim?””
Ryan looked at him.
“She promised me she would help fix my debt.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Ryan pulled out his phone.
“Should I show them the messages?””
Vanessa went quiet.
Daniel looked between them.
“What debt?””
Ryan looked at him.
“Your future wife helped me hide mine.””
The room felt frozen.
I looked at Vanessa.
“How much?””
She whispered.
“Ryan…”
“How much?”” Daniel repeated.
Ryan answered.
“Almost fifty thousand dollars.””
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“You told me your savings were gone because of wedding expenses.””
She looked down.
“I was scared.””
“You were lying.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I love you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, I thought he might forgive her.
Because love can make people overlook terrible things.
But then he looked at me.
At my injured arm.
At the papers.
At the truth.
And something changed.
“I spent five years believing the person you showed me.””
He looked back at Vanessa.
“But I don’t know the person standing here.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Daniel, please.””
He stepped away.
“I need space.””
She grabbed his arm.
“Don’t leave.””
He gently pulled away.
“I’m not leaving because of Ryan.””
Ryan looked surprised.
Daniel continued.
“I’m leaving because of you.””
Vanessa broke down.
Then, suddenly, her phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
She stared at the screen.
Her face turned white.
“Who is it?”” Daniel asked.
She didn’t answer.
Ryan looked at the phone.
And his confident expression disappeared.
Because whoever was calling…
Was someone even he was afraid of.
Vanessa slowly answered.
“Hello?””
A voice came through the speaker.
Her eyes widened.
Then she whispered:
“No… you weren’t supposed to call until after the wedding.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa looked at all of us.
And for the first time…
My sister looked completely powerless.
“It’s the person who started all of this.””
A pause.
May you like
Then she said a name.
“Mom.””
