Chapter 2: The Message He Was Never Supposed to See

I barely slept that night.

The doctor’s office was closed, but I spent hours staring at my phone, wondering if I should call the emergency line.

My shoulder throbbed with every heartbeat.

Every time I closed my eyes, I felt the cold water rushing over my head again.

But the pain wasn’t the worst part.

The worst part was remembering Vanessa’s face.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Annoyance.

Like I was an inconvenience.

At sunrise, I sat alone on the back porch of the estate with an ice pack pressed against my shoulder.

The lake was quiet.

Beautiful.

Almost cruelly beautiful.

A place that looked peaceful could still hold the ugliest moments.

“Can I sit here?””

I looked up.

Daniel stood there holding two cups of coffee.

I nodded.

“Sure.””

He sat across from me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he placed one cup on the table.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“You didn’t push me.””

“No,” he said.

“But I should have noticed things sooner.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel looked down at his hands.

“I’ve known Vanessa for five years. I thought I knew her.””

The sadness in his voice surprised me.

Not anger.

Not rage.

Regret.

“She always told me you were sensitive,” he continued.

“She said you exaggerated things because you wanted attention.””

My stomach tightened.

“She said that?””

He nodded slowly.

“After last night, I started wondering what else she lied about.””

I looked away.

I didn’t want to hear it.

Because a small part of me had always hoped Vanessa loved me, even if she didn’t always treat me well.

Daniel took a breath.

“Emily, did she ever tell you about the insurance issue?””

I looked back at him.

“What insurance issue?””

Before he could answer, the back door opened.

Vanessa stepped outside wearing sunglasses and a designer robe, looking like someone preparing for a photo shoot instead of facing the consequences of what she had done.

“There you are,” she said to Daniel.

Her voice was sweet.

Too sweet.

“I’ve been looking everywhere for you.””

Daniel stood up.

“Have you?””

Vanessa stopped.

Something in his tone made her nervous.

“What’s that supposed to mean?””

Daniel held up his phone.

“I called the resort.””

Her expression changed.

“What?””

“The honeymoon is canceled.””

For a second, she looked like she didn’t understand the words.

Then she laughed.

“You’re joking.””

“I’m not.””

“Daniel, you cannot cancel our honeymoon because of a stupid pool accident.””

His jaw tightened.

“It wasn’t an accident.””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then back at him.

“She’s making you think it was worse than it was.””

I felt something inside me break.

Even now.

Even after everyone saw.

She was still doing it.

Daniel shook his head.

“I heard you laugh.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“What?””

“After she fell in. You laughed before anyone pulled her out.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than the night before.

Vanessa looked around.

Searching for someone to defend her.

Nobody did.

Then she lowered her voice.

“You’re really going to embarrass me in front of everyone because of my sister?””

Daniel stared at her.

“No. You embarrassed yourself.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation seemed to hurt her more than anything.

Because she realized he was actually thinking about it.

I quietly stood up.

“I’m going inside.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily, wait.””

I stopped.

He looked like he wanted to say something.

But before he could, Vanessa’s phone buzzed.

She glanced down.

The color drained from her face.

“What is it?”” Daniel asked.

She quickly locked the screen.

“Nothing.””

But it wasn’t nothing.

I saw the name at the top of the message before she turned away.

It was from someone saved in her contacts as:

“Mom.””

The message preview was only a few words.

*He found out about the money.*

Daniel noticed my expression.

“What money?””

Vanessa froze.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel slowly held out his hand.

“Vanessa.””

She tightened her grip around the phone.

“Give me the phone.””

May you like

And for the first time since I had known her…

My sister looked afraid.
