Chapter 5: The Truth She Buried
For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand what Vanessa had just said.
The room felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
“Ryan is the reason you and Daniel are getting married?””
Vanessa looked toward the door as if she expected someone to walk in.
“Keep your voice down.””
I stared at her.
“You’re worried about people hearing?””
“No. I’m worried about you misunderstanding.””
I almost laughed.
“Misunderstanding?””
My voice shook.
“Vanessa, you pushed me into a pool after major surgery, lied about needing my money, and now you’re telling me some man named Ryan is connected to your marriage?””
She flinched.
For once, she didn’t immediately fight back.
She sat on the edge of the bed and covered her face with both hands.
“I never wanted it to become this complicated.””
I stood near my suitcase.
“You made it complicated.””
She looked up.
“I made one mistake.””
“One?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know how it looks.””
“No, Vanessa. You don’t.””
I pointed toward my shoulder.
“You knew I couldn’t swim.””
She looked away.
That tiny movement told me everything.
She wasn’t denying it.
“I was angry,” she whispered.
“Angry?””
“Yes.””
“At me?””
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“Why?””
Her jaw tightened.
“Because everything was finally supposed to be about me.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
Not because they surprised me.
Because they confirmed what I had always felt.
Vanessa didn’t hate me.
She hated when I existed in moments she wanted to own.
“My wedding weekend,” she continued.
“My engagement. My moment.””
I stared at her.
“You think I wanted attention?””
“No.””
She paused.
Then she said something even worse.
“I think you always find a way to need people.””
I felt something inside me go quiet.
A strange calm.
The kind that comes when you finally stop trying to convince someone to see your pain.
“Tell me about Ryan.””
Vanessa looked nervous.
“He was my boyfriend before Daniel.””
“How long?””
“Three years.””
I blinked.
“Three years?””
She nodded.
“We broke up before I met Daniel.””
“Then why is he here?””
She looked down.
“Because he knows something.””
“What?””
Her fingers twisted together.
“He knows how I met Daniel.””
I waited.
Finally, she whispered:
“I met Daniel because of Ryan.””
The room became silent.
“Explain.””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Ryan and I had a terrible breakup. He was reckless. He had money problems. He was always promising he would change.””
“And?””
“And he borrowed money from me.””
“How much?””
She hesitated.
“A lot.””
I frowned.
“Your money?””
She looked at me.
“No.””
My stomach dropped.
“Whose money?””
She didn’t answer.
But I already knew.
“My parents?””
She nodded.
“Vanessa…”
“I was going to pay it back.””
“With what?””
She looked away.
“Daniel.””
The answer made no sense.
Until it did.
“You used Daniel’s money?””
“No.””
“Then what are you saying?””
She swallowed.
“Ryan knew Daniel from work. After we broke up, Ryan introduced us.””
I stared at her.
“So Ryan introduced you to Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“And now Ryan is blackmailing you?””
Her silence confirmed it.
I stepped back.
“How long has this been happening?””
“A few months.””
“Months?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“He found out about the wedding. He started contacting me.””
“What does he want?””
“Money.””
“From where?””
She looked at me.
My stomach sank.
“From you?””
“No.””
But she said it too quickly.
I knew.
“Vanessa.””
She closed her eyes.
“I thought if I could get through the wedding, everything would calm down.””
“You thought stealing from me would fix it?””
“I was going to pay you back!””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true!””
I looked at her.
“Then why did you lie?””
She had no answer.
A knock came from the door.
We both froze.
“Vanessa?””
Daniel’s voice.
Her face changed instantly.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Don’t tell him.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because you don’t understand what he’ll do.””
I opened the door.
Daniel stood there.
His expression was serious.
But his eyes weren’t on Vanessa.
They were on me.
“Emily.””
I looked at him.
“Ryan is here.””
Vanessa went completely still.
Daniel continued.
“And he just told me something about Vanessa that I think you need to hear.””
I looked at my sister.
She looked terrified.
Then Daniel stepped aside.
A man was standing in the hallway.
Tall.
Dark hair.
A familiar confidence in his expression.
Ryan Carter.
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
And smiled.
May you like
“Finally,” he said.
“Someone else knows the truth.””
