Chapter 7: The Mother Who Chose a Side

Vanessa stood completely still, phone pressed against her ear.

Nobody spoke.

Even Ryan looked uncomfortable.

That was when I knew this wasn’t just another secret.

This was something bigger.

Something that had been controlling all of us from the shadows.

“Mom,” Vanessa whispered.

“Why are you calling?””

A woman’s voice came through the speaker.

Even from where I stood, I could hear the panic.

“Vanessa, you need to come home right now.””

Vanessa looked around the room.

Her eyes landed on Daniel.

Then on me.

“Mom, it’s already done.””

A pause.

Then the voice became sharper.

“What do you mean, it’s already done?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“He knows.””

The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.

Then her mother said something that made my blood run cold.

“Does Emily know too?””

I felt my stomach twist.

Vanessa looked at me.

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

Her mother knew.

She knew about me.

She knew about the money.

She knew everything.

Daniel took a step forward.

“Put her on speaker.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Put her on speaker.””

“Daniel, please.””

“Now.””

For the first time, Vanessa listened.

She slowly moved the phone away from her ear and pressed the speaker button.

“Hello?”” Daniel said.

A moment of silence.

Then her mother’s voice changed.

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

Another pause.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

I stared at the phone.

Not because she apologized.

Because she sounded calm.

Too calm.

Like this wasn’t a disaster.

Like it was a problem she could negotiate away.

“You knew?”” Daniel asked.

Her mother sighed.

“I knew Vanessa was struggling.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

Daniel looked away.

I saw his jaw tighten.

“How long?””

“Since before the wedding planning started.””

My chest tightened.

Before the wedding.

This wasn’t a mistake.

It was a plan.

I looked at Vanessa.

She couldn’t even look at me.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“Did you know about Emily’s money?””

Another silence.

Then her mother answered.

“Yes.””

I felt like someone had hit me.

I had spent years defending this family.

Years telling myself that Vanessa was just immature.

That she didn’t mean to hurt me.

That maybe my mother would eventually see what was happening.

But they both knew.

They both chose.

“Why?”” I asked.

Everyone looked at me.

I stepped closer to the phone.

“Why did you let her take my money?””

Her mother’s voice softened.

“Emily, you don’t understand.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone always said that.

“You’re right,” I said.

“I don’t understand.””

“You’ve always been stronger than Vanessa.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“She needed help.””

“And I didn’t?””

Nobody spoke.

My eyes burned.

“I had surgery. I was recovering. I was scared. And you still thought she deserved my savings more than I did?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Emily…”

I turned toward her.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“But you need to hear this.””

She looked at me.

“For years, I kept trying to understand why you treated me like I was your enemy.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“But I finally understand.””

I pointed at the phone.

“You had people helping you.””

Vanessa looked down.

Daniel watched silently.

Then Ryan spoke.

“You’re all forgetting something.””

Everyone turned.

Ryan held up his phone.

“I didn’t come here just to expose Vanessa.””

He looked nervous now.

“I came because someone else is coming.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan looked at Vanessa.

“She didn’t tell you everything.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Ryan.””

He ignored her.

“Your wedding planner wasn’t the only person who received changes yesterday.””

Daniel stared.

“What changes?””

Ryan swallowed.

“Someone arranged a meeting after the wedding.””

“With who?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Emily.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Ryan pulled up a message.

It showed my name.

A time.

A location.

And a note:

*After the ceremony. Make sure Emily signs.*

Daniel took the phone.

“Signs what?””

Ryan looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

I looked at my sister.

“Knows what?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“What was I supposed to sign?””

She covered her mouth.

Then the front door of the estate opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman walked inside carrying a handbag.

She looked exactly like Vanessa.

Same confident posture.

Same cold eyes.

Her mother.

She looked around the room.

Then she said:

May you like

“I see we’re done pretending.””

And in her hand was a folder with my name written across the front.
