Chapter 9: The Promise That Changed My Marriage
Nathan sat down slowly.
For the first time since I met him, he looked small.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Not like the man who always had an explanation.
Just a man caught in the middle of a lie.
“What did you promise them?”” I asked again.
He rubbed his hands together.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“Do not say my name like that fixes anything.””
He looked at the floor.
“When we were dating…”
I waited.
“My family had expectations.””
I almost smiled.
“Of course they did.””
He ignored that.
“My parents wanted me to keep certain traditions.””
“Traditions?””
He nodded.
“They believed the first child should carry the family name.””
I stared at him.
“Our son has your last name.””
“Yes.””
“So what is the problem?””
Nathan swallowed.
“They wanted more involvement.””
“More involvement?””
I stepped closer.
“How much?””
He didn’t answer.
“Nathan.””
“They wanted decision-making rights.””
I felt sick.
“Over Caleb?””
“And Lily.””
I took a step back.
“No.””
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””
“How was it supposed to happen?””
He closed his eyes.
“My mother said once we had children, everyone would adjust.””
Everyone.
Except me.
I walked toward the window.
The city lights blurred.
I thought about every time Patricia corrected my parenting.
Every time Vanessa made comments about my choices.
Every time Nathan told me I was overreacting.
It was never about dinner.
It was never about the house.
It was never about one argument.
It was about ownership.
They thought they owned my home.
My marriage.
My children.
My life.
“When did you plan to tell me?””
Nathan looked ashamed.
“I didn’t.””
The honesty hurt.
“But why?””
“Because I knew you would leave.””
I turned around.
“And you still married me?””
He looked at me.
“I loved you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You loved me as long as I fit into their plan.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
He couldn’t answer.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Claire.
I opened it.
*Emily, I found something else. You need to come to my office immediately.*
I showed Nathan.
“What is it?””
“I don’t know.””
He stood.
“Let me come with you.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
“Emily.””
“You don’t get to stand beside me now because you’re scared.””
His face fell.
“I’m trying to fix this.””
I grabbed my coat.
“You’re trying to fix the consequences.””
I left.
At Claire’s office, she had a folder waiting.
She didn’t waste time.
“I found a financial trail.””
I sat down.
“What kind?””
“Payments.””
“From who?””
She opened the folder.
“From Patricia.””
“To Nathan?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Then who?””
Claire placed the papers in front of me.
The payments were made to…
Vanessa.
I looked up.
“Why would Patricia pay Vanessa?””
“That’s what I wanted to know.””
Claire pointed at another document.
“Then I found this.””
I read the heading.
My stomach tightened.
It was a private agreement.
Between Patricia and Vanessa.
About my family.
About my children.
About me.
The first sentence made my hands tremble.
*“Once Emily is removed from the household, Vanessa will assume primary family support responsibilities.””*
I stopped reading.
Removed.
Like I was an object.
Like I was something to be replaced.
Claire watched my reaction.
“There’s more.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She turned the page.
A name appeared.
A name I never expected.
A witness signature.
Nathan.
I stared at the paper.
“No.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
I couldn’t breathe.
Because now I knew.
May you like
Nathan wasn’t just trapped between me and his family.
He had helped them build the trap.
