Chapter 6: The Plan Behind the Smile

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

The children were always the reason we knew Emily would eventually leave.

My hands shook as I held the letter.

They expected me to leave.

They planned for it.

I sat down in the office chair because my legs suddenly felt weak.

For years, I thought I was failing to become part of Nathan’s family.

I thought I wasn’t trying hard enough.

I thought maybe if I cooked better, smiled more, complained less, they would finally accept me.

But they never wanted acceptance.

They wanted control.

My phone rang.

Nathan.

I stared at his name.

Part of me wanted to ignore it.

The other part needed answers.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

His voice was cautious.

“At the house.””

“Emily, don’t touch anything.””

I looked at the letter in my hand.

“Why?””

“Because those documents belong to my family.””

I froze.

“My family?””

He immediately corrected himself.

“I mean, they’re important.””

“No, Nathan.””

I stood.

“I understand now.””

“Understand what?””

“That I was never your partner.””

Silence.

“You were building a future with them.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then tell me this.””

I held up the letter even though he couldn’t see it.

“Did your mother write this?””

Another silence.

My heart sank.

“Nathan.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

“How long have you known?””

“I didn’t know she wrote that.””

“But you knew about the plan.””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I walked through the hallway.

The same hallway where family photos hung.

Our wedding photo.

Baby pictures.

Birthdays.

A perfect image.

A fake one.

“What plan?”” I asked.

Nathan sounded tired.

“Emily, please.””

“No.””

I stopped in the living room.

“What did they plan?””

He breathed heavily.

“They thought you would eventually give up.””

“On what?””

“The house.””

I felt numb.

“They wanted me to leave?””

“They thought you would get tired.””

“And you?””

His voice cracked slightly.

“I didn’t think it would happen like this.””

I laughed softly.

“You didn’t think your sister would hit me?””

“No.””

“You didn’t think your mother would threaten me?””

“No.””

“You didn’t think I would discover you were all hiding things from me?””

No answer.

I looked around the room.

Twelve years.

Twelve years of my life.

Then I saw something on the bookshelf.

A photo frame.

Behind it was another envelope.

This one was newer.

I opened it.

Inside was a printed message.

An email.

From Vanessa.

To Patricia.

The date was six months earlier.

I read the first line.

*“Mom, Emily is still refusing to sell the house.””*

My stomach turned.

Sell the house?

I kept reading.

*“Nathan won’t confront her, so we need another way.””*

My heart started pounding.

Another way.

Then I reached the final line.

*“If we push hard enough, she will leave. And once she leaves, Nathan and the children will come back to us.””*

I stopped.

The children.

Not just the house.

They wanted my children too.

I took a picture of the email with my phone.

Then I heard the front door open.

My body went still.

Someone was home.

“Emily?””

Vanessa’s voice echoed through the hallway.

I slowly turned.

She stood there.

The woman who slapped me.

The woman who thought she had won.

But this time, I wasn’t afraid.

Her eyes dropped to the paper in my hand.

May you like

And for the first time…

Vanessa looked scared.
