Chapter 8: My Husband’s Final Betrayal

I stared at the document.

I couldn’t understand the words.

Not because they were complicated.

Because they were impossible.

“Nathan filed this?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

She folded her hands.

“Based on what I’m seeing, he is requesting temporary custody arrangements.””

The room became silent.

Temporary custody.

Those two words felt like a punch.

“He’s trying to take my children?””

Claire’s expression softened.

“He’s trying to establish his position.””

“My position?””

I laughed bitterly.

“I have been their mother every day of their lives.””

“I know.””

“He traveled for work.””

“Yes.””

“I went to every doctor appointment.””

“Yes.””

“I stayed awake through every fever.””

“Yes.””

Claire looked at me.

“But now he’s trying to make the court see a different story.””

I looked at the document again.

A different story.

Of course.

That was what his family did best.

They didn’t change reality.

They changed the way people saw it.

I left Claire’s office and drove straight to Nathan’s apartment.

He opened the door and immediately looked nervous.

“Emily.””

I held up the papers.

“What is this?””

He didn’t pretend.

“I was going to talk to you.””

“When?””

He looked away.

“Soon.””

I stepped inside.

“You filed for custody before talking to me.””

“I needed protection.””

“Protection from what?””

He didn’t answer.

“Say it.””

“From you taking the kids away.””

I stared at him.

“I took them away?””

“You left.””

“I left because your sister assaulted me.””

“You slapped her too.””

The words were quiet.

But they hurt.

Because they showed me he still didn’t understand.

“I defended myself.””

“That’s not how it looks.””

There it was.

Not what happened.

How it looked.

I shook my head.

“You’re worried about appearances.””

“I’m worried about our children.””

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You’re worried about controlling the story.””

Nathan’s face tightened.

“You always make me the villain.””

I looked at him.

“Do you know why?””

He didn’t respond.

“Because every time I ask you to stand beside me, you stand somewhere else.””

For a moment, I thought I saw regret.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

I saw the name.

Mom.

Patricia.

He answered.

“Hi, Mom.””

I almost smiled.

Of course.

Even now.

He answered her.

“Emily is here.””

I heard Patricia’s voice through the phone.

Not the words.

Just the tone.

Nathan stepped away.

“No, she doesn’t know everything.””

My heart stopped.

Doesn’t know everything?

I moved closer.

Nathan noticed.

His expression changed.

“Mom, I said I’ll handle it.””

I grabbed the phone from his hand.

“Nathan?””

Patricia went silent.

Then:

“Emily.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You really shouldn’t have looked where you didn’t belong.””

I felt cold.

“Where I didn’t belong?””

“Yes.””

I gripped the phone.

“It’s my house.””

“No, sweetheart.””

Her words were gentle.

Almost worse.

“You never understood the arrangement.””

“What arrangement?””

A pause.

Then she said:

“The one Nathan agreed to before you married him.””

I looked at Nathan.

He went pale.

“What did he agree to?””

Patricia didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Ask him why he promised us the first child.””

My hand went numb.

“What?””

Nathan’s face drained of color.

“Mom, stop.””

But she continued.

“He knew our family needed a legacy.””

I stared at my husband.

The man I had loved.

The man I trusted.

“What is she talking about?””

Nathan reached for the phone.

“Emily, don’t listen to her.””

But it was too late.

Because I had already heard enough.

I ended the call.

Then I looked at him.

“What did you promise your mother?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

May you like

And that was when I realized…

The house was never the only thing they wanted from me.
