Chapter 18: The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming
For a moment, I thought I had misheard her.
“My sister?””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“Yes.””
“No.””
The word came out immediately.
Because some truths are too painful to consider.
Rachel.
The person who helped me escape.
The person who held me while I cried.
The person who told me she understood.
Vanessa pulled out her phone.
“I have proof.””
I didn’t take it.
I couldn’t.
“Why would I believe you?””
“Because you don’t have to believe me.””
She held up the screen.
“Just look.””
I stared at the message.
A conversation.
Between Rachel and Patricia.
My heart started pounding.
The date was from months before the anniversary dinner.
Before the slap.
Before I left.
The first message was from Rachel.
*“I don’t know how much longer Emily can handle this.””*
Patricia replied:
*“She will eventually understand what is best for everyone.””*
My hands went cold.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
“Exactly what it looks like.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
I didn’t know.
And that scared me.
I left without another word.
I drove to Rachel’s apartment.
She opened the door and immediately knew something was wrong.
“Emily?””
I held up the phone.
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“Explain.””
Rachel looked down.
“Where did you get that?””
My chest tightened.
“Everyone keeps asking that instead of denying it.””
“Emily…”
“Did you talk to Patricia?””
Rachel sat down.
Slowly.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Not because it surprised me.
Because it confirmed my fear.
“Why?””
Rachel covered her face.
“I was trying to help you.””
I stared.
“Help me?””
“Yes.””
She looked up.
“I thought if I understood what they wanted, I could protect you.””
“By talking to them?””
“I was trying to gather information.””
I laughed.
A painful sound.
“You could have told me.””
“I was afraid.””
Another person afraid.
Another excuse.
I stepped back.
“Everyone was afraid.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to be angry.
But I was exhausted.
“What else did you tell them?””
“Nothing important.””
I stared at her.
“Nothing important?””
She looked away.
That was the answer.
“What did you tell them?””
Rachel whispered:
“I told Patricia you were thinking about leaving.””
My heart stopped.
“When?””
“Before the anniversary dinner.””
I closed my eyes.
That was it.
That was the missing piece.
They knew I was close to breaking.
They knew.
Rachel continued.
“I didn’t know they would use it against you.””
“But they did.””
“Yes.””
I looked around the apartment.
The same place where I had felt safe.
Now it felt different.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had chosen something over me.
“I need to go.””
“Emily, please.””
I opened the door.
“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””
Outside, my phone rang.
Nathan.
I almost ignored it.
But I answered.
“Hello?””
His voice was urgent.
“Emily, where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because I found something.””
I closed my eyes.
Another secret.
“What now?””
Nathan took a breath.
“It’s about your sister.””
My stomach dropped.
“What about her?””
A pause.
Then Nathan said:
“Rachel wasn’t just talking to my mother.””
I froze.
“What do you mean?””
May you like
His voice lowered.
“She was working with her.””
