Chapter 10: The Husband Who Chose a Side

I stared at Nathan’s signature until the ink blurred.

The man who promised to love me forever had signed a document planning the moment I would be pushed out of my own family.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

Claire quietly closed the folder.

“Emily, I know this is difficult.””

Difficult.

That word almost felt insulting now.

Difficult was a bad day at work.

Difficult was a broken appliance.

This was discovering that the person sleeping beside me for twelve years had helped create a life where I was replaceable.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Claire nodded.

“The agreement was created three years ago.””

“Three years?””

“Yes.””

I looked down.

Three years ago.

That was the year Nathan’s behavior changed.

The year he started saying I was “too independent.””

The year his mother began visiting more often.

The year Vanessa started making comments about my parenting.

I had thought they were random.

They weren’t.

“They were preparing,” I whispered.

Claire didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I took pictures of every page.

Every signature.

Every piece of proof.

Then I drove back to Rachel’s apartment.

Nathan was waiting outside.

Of course he was.

He stood beside his car, looking exhausted.

“Emily.””

I kept walking.

“Please.””

I stopped.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed him to hear me.

“How long?””

He looked confused.

“How long what?””

“How long did you know?””

His face changed.

“I didn’t know about every detail.””

“That’s not my question.””

He looked away.

That was the answer.

“How long did you know they wanted me gone?””

Nathan rubbed his jaw.

“Emily, things got complicated.””

I laughed quietly.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“You keep explaining circumstances.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m not asking why it happened. I’m asking why you let it happen.””

His eyes filled with frustration.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I stared at him.

“Your family made a plan to remove me from my children’s lives.””

“They weren’t going to do that.””

“Then why did you sign?””

Silence.

The question landed exactly where it needed to.

Nathan looked down.

“I thought it was just a backup plan.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“A backup plan for what?””

He didn’t answer.

“For when I left?””

“No.””

“For when you left me?””

His eyes lifted.

And I saw it.

Regret.

But regret wasn’t the same as loyalty.

“You should have told me,” I said.

“I know.””

“You should have chosen me.””

“I know.””

“You should have protected me.””

His voice cracked.

“I know.””

I stepped back.

“Knowing now doesn’t change what you did then.””

Nathan reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

“I love you.””

I looked at him.

“Love without protection is just a word.””

He swallowed.

“I can fix this.””

“No.””

I looked toward Rachel’s apartment.

“You can’t fix twelve years.””

That night, I sat beside my children while they slept.

Caleb was holding his favorite stuffed dinosaur.

Lily had her blanket wrapped around her shoulders.

They looked peaceful.

They didn’t know adults had been making decisions about their future.

They didn’t know people they trusted had been planning around them.

My phone rang.

It was Claire.

“Emily, I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

“There’s a hearing scheduled.””

My heart tightened.

“When?””

“Three days.””

I closed my eyes.

“What is Nathan asking for?””

Claire hesitated.

“Temporary custody.””

I already knew.

But hearing it still hurt.

“And Patricia?””

“She’s listed as a supporting witness.””

I looked at my children.

Then at the documents on the table.

They weren’t just fighting for my house.

They were fighting to erase me.

Claire continued.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“Their argument is that you created an unstable environment by leaving suddenly.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“They caused the situation.””

“I know.””

“And now they’re using my reaction against me.””

“Yes.””

I looked out the window.

The woman who had spent twelve years keeping everyone together was suddenly being described as the person who destroyed everything.

Then Claire said:

“Emily, there’s something else you should see before the hearing.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

My breath stopped.

“A recording of what?””

May you like

Claire’s voice became serious.

“Of Nathan and his family discussing you.””
