Chapter 12: The Secret Before Our Wedding

I read the message five times.

Before our wedding.

My entire body went cold.

Because suddenly, I understood.

The betrayal didn’t begin after we married.

It began before I ever said yes.

I showed Claire.

Her expression changed.

“Do you know who sent this?””

“No.””

She looked at the number.

“We need to find out.””

I spent the entire night thinking about the beginning of my relationship with Nathan.

The first date.

The proposal.

The wedding.

Everything I thought was real.

The next morning, I received another message.

This time, there was a photo attached.

My hands froze.

It was Nathan.

Ten years younger.

Standing beside Patricia.

And beside them…

Was a woman I didn’t recognize.

The caption underneath said:

*“Ask Nathan why this woman disappeared before your wedding.””*

I stared at the picture.

Who was she?

I called Nathan.

He answered immediately.

“Emily?””

“Who is she?””

Silence.

I sent the photo.

He didn’t respond.

“Nathan.””

Finally:

“Where did you get that?””

Again.

Not denial.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Who is she?””

His voice became quiet.

“Her name is Rachel.””

My heart skipped.

“Rachel?””

“Yes.””

“Your ex?””

“No.””

That confused me.

“Then who?””

Nathan took a breath.

“She was someone my family wanted me to marry.””

I sat down.

“What?””

“Before you.””

I couldn’t speak.

“She was your family’s choice?””

“Yes.””

“And what happened?””

Nathan was silent.

Then:

“She found out about the arrangement.””

My fingers tightened.

“What arrangement?””

The answer came slowly.

“She found out my parents expected her to follow their rules.””

Rules.

Always rules.

“What did she do?””

“She left.””

I closed my eyes.

“And then you met me.””

“Yes.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because the pattern was obvious.

They didn’t love people.

They selected them.

Claire met me later that day.

She listened carefully.

“This woman could be important.””

“Why?””

“Because she may prove this was a pattern.””

A pattern.

Not just with me.

With other women.

Other lives.

Other families.

I searched for Rachel.

It took two days.

I finally found her.

She agreed to meet.

We sat in a quiet coffee shop.

She looked nervous.

“I never thought I’d see someone from Nathan’s life again.””

I studied her.

“You knew about his family?””

She nodded.

“I knew enough.””

“What happened?””

Rachel looked down.

“They wanted a wife.””

I waited.

“Not a partner.””

The words hit me.

“They wanted someone who would obey.””

I nodded.

“That’s exactly what happened to me.””

She looked surprised.

“Did they do it again?””

I almost cried.

“Yes.””

Rachel reached across the table.

“I’m sorry.””

I believed her.

Because unlike Nathan’s family, she didn’t sound like someone defending herself.

She sounded like someone who escaped.

Then she said:

“There’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

“When I left, Nathan begged me to come back.””

I froze.

“He did?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked directly at me.

“Because his family told him if he couldn’t control one wife…”

She paused.

“…they would find another.””

The coffee shop suddenly felt silent.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Nathan.

I opened it.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*“Emily, I need to tell you the truth about why I married you.””*
