Chapter 6: The Evidence Nobody Expected

I couldn’t speak.

The room suddenly felt too quiet.

James reached for my hand.

“Claire?””

I looked at him.

My face must have shown everything because he immediately stood.

“What happened?””

I covered the phone.

“Someone reported something involving Emma.””

His expression changed.

“Who?””

I returned the phone to my ear.

“Detective Harris, who filed the other report?””

There was a pause.

“I can’t discuss details until we complete the interview.””

My heart pounded.

“But my daughter is six months old.””

“I understand.””

“Is she in danger?””

Another pause.

“No. Not at this moment.””

Not at this moment.

Those words were somehow worse.

James took the phone from my hand gently.

“This is Captain Walker. Can you tell me what we need to do?””

The detective’s tone became more formal.

“Captain, we need both of you to come in tomorrow. We need statements from everyone involved.””

“Does my sister have anything to do with this?””

Silence.

Then:

“We’ll discuss that during the interview.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Emma laughed from her play mat.

A tiny, innocent sound.

And it broke my heart.

Because while adults were fighting, she had no idea anything had happened.

James walked over and picked her up.

“She’s okay.””

I looked at him.

“How can you know?””

“Because she’s here.””

He kissed the top of her head.

“And because we’re going to protect her.””

The next morning, we went to the police station.

I had never been inside one before.

Everything felt too serious.

Too real.

A detective named Harris met us in a small office.

She was calm and professional.

Not cold.

Just careful.

“Thank you for coming.””

We sat down.

She opened a folder.

“I want to start by saying this is not an accusation against either of you.””

I nodded.

“Then what is it?””

She looked at the folder.

“When your sister filed her complaint, she included details about Thanksgiving.””

My stomach tightened.

“She lied.””

Detective Harris held up a hand.

“We’re going to establish facts.””

She turned a page.

“She claimed Captain Walker threatened her physically.””

James didn’t react.

“And?””

“She also claimed she was concerned about Emma being raised in an aggressive environment.””

I felt anger rising.

“But she hit Emma.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“That is why we need to discuss something else.””

She pulled out another document.

“A report was filed anonymously the night of Thanksgiving.””

I stared.

“Anonymous?””

“Yes.””

“About Emma?””

“Yes.””

My hands went cold.

“What did it say?””

The detective looked at James.

Then at me.

“It said a family member witnessed inappropriate behavior toward the child.””

My breath caught.

“By who?””

The detective slid a paper across the table.

At the top was a name.

Lauren Walker.

I stared.

“No.””

James looked at the paper.

His face remained controlled.

But I knew him.

I saw the anger underneath.

Detective Harris continued.

“We are still investigating. But we have reason to believe your sister may have filed the report herself.””

I looked up.

“Why would she do that?””

The detective folded her hands.

“Sometimes people create a situation where they can later present themselves as the person who needs protection.””

I understood.

Lauren wasn’t just trying to avoid blame.

She was trying to reverse it.

“She wants people to think we’re the problem.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“That appears to be the possibility.””

On the way home, nobody spoke.

When we reached the house, I saw something sitting on our front porch.

A package.

No name.

No address.

Just a small box.

James immediately stepped in front of me.

“Stay back.””

My heart started racing.

“What is that?””

He carefully picked it up.

There was a note attached.

Three words.

My hands started shaking before I even read them.

Because I recognized Lauren’s handwriting.

The note said:

*You wanted proof.*

James opened the box.

Inside was something that made both of us freeze.

A photograph.

Of Emma.

Taken inside our home.

May you like

And written on the back were the words:

*Now you’ll know what I saw.*
