Chapter 16: The Secret James Carried
I read my mother’s letter three times.
The words stayed the same.
*Ask him about the night he came home from deployment.*
I looked across the room at James.
He was standing near the window, holding Emma while she played with the collar of his shirt.
For a moment, everything looked normal.
My husband.
My daughter.
My home.
The life we fought so hard to protect.
Then I remembered the letter.
A secret about James.
My heart tightened.
“James.””
He looked over.
“What?””
I held up the paper.
His expression changed immediately.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
And that scared me more than anything.
“You know what this is about.””
He was quiet.
Emma reached for him, completely unaware of the tension around her.
James gently handed her to me.
Then he sat down.
“Claire.””
I waited.
“Tell me the truth.””
He looked at the floor.
“I was hoping you would never have to know.””
My chest tightened.
“Know what?””
He took a deep breath.
“When I came home from deployment, there was an investigation.””
I frowned.
“An investigation?””
“Yes.””
“About what?””
He rubbed his hands together.
“I made a decision while I was overseas.””
My heart sank.
“What kind of decision?””
“One that saved someone’s life.””
I stared at him.
“That doesn’t sound like a secret.””
“It wasn’t the decision itself.””
He looked at me.
“It was who was involved.””
I sat down.
“James, what does this have to do with Lauren?””
He was silent.
Then he said:
“Your sister found out about something that happened during my last deployment.””
I felt cold.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
He looked frustrated.
“She had access to information she should never have had.””
That sounded exactly like Lauren.
Finding doors.
Finding weaknesses.
Finding things she could use.
“What happened?””
James looked toward Emma.
Then back at me.
“During my deployment, one of my team members made a mistake.””
I listened.
“He was blamed for something he didn’t do.””
“What did you do?””
“I defended him.””
“Okay.””
James shook his head.
“It wasn’t that simple.””
He explained slowly.
There had been an incident.
A dangerous operation.
A decision made under impossible circumstances.
James had challenged the official report because he believed someone innocent was being punished.
“I went against the recommendation of my superiors.””
My eyes widened.
“You risked your career?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because it was the right thing to do.””
I felt relief.
But something still bothered me.
“So why would Lauren care?””
James looked away.
“Because the person involved was connected to her.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
And then:
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“What?””
James nodded.
“The person I protected was someone your mother knew.””
I tried to understand.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I don’t know all the details.””
He paused.
“But Lauren found out there was a connection.””
I stood.
“So this entire thing…”
I looked around.
“The custody.
The lies.
The attack on our family.””
James nodded.
“She wanted leverage.””
My anger returned.
“She wanted to control us.””
“Yes.””
I walked to the window.
The street outside looked peaceful.
A normal neighborhood.
A normal life.
Except nothing felt normal anymore.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
James looked hurt.
“Because I didn’t want you involved.””
I turned around.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By keeping secrets?””
He looked down.
I immediately regretted my tone.
But the pain was real.
“I spent weeks thinking I was crazy.””
James looked up.
“I know.””
“I thought Lauren was attacking us because she was obsessed with Emma.””
“She was.””
“But there was more.””
“Yes.””
I sat back down.
“Who else knows?””
“Your mother.””
“Your father?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer bothered me.
Because my father had spent years afraid.
Maybe he knew more than he admitted.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Lauren.
I didn’t want to open it.
But I did.
One sentence.
*Now you finally asked him.*
My blood ran cold.
James saw my face.
“She knows.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
He took the phone.
Read the message.
Then whispered:
“She’s been watching.””
A second message appeared.
*You still think he’s the hero? Ask him what he promised that night.*
I looked at James.
“What promise?””
He didn’t answer.

And for the first time since I met him, I saw something in his eyes I had never seen before.
Fear.
