Chapter 12: The Truth Behind Emma’s Name
I stared at the message until the screen went dark.
Then I turned it back on.
Because I needed to be sure.
Maybe I had read it wrong.
Maybe exhaustion was making me see things.
But the message was still there.
*You should ask James where Emma really came from.*
My first reaction was anger.
My second was fear.
Not because I believed Lauren.
Because I knew she had discovered something.
And Lauren didn’t reveal secrets unless she thought they gave her power.
James walked into the room.
“What happened?””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
His expression didn’t change.
That scared me.
“James.””
He looked at me.
“I need you to tell me something.””
“Okay.””
“Is there anything about Emma that I don’t know?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That silence hurt.
Not because it proved Lauren was right.
Because it meant there was something.
“James.””
He sat down.
“Claire.””
My heart pounded.
“Tell me.””
He looked toward the window.
Then back at me.
“There is something.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
“Not about Emma.””
I waited.
“About how we became parents.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
James took a breath.
“When we found out you were pregnant, there were complications.””
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice softened.
“You know what the doctors told you.””
I stared.
“But there were other concerns.””
“What concerns?””
He looked at me carefully.
“You were very sick after Emma was born.””
I remembered.
The exhaustion.
The hospital visits.
The fear.
“But what does that have to do with Lauren?””
James looked down.
“Because during that time, your sister offered to help.””
My stomach tightened.
“Help with what?””
“With paperwork.””
I felt a chill.
“What paperwork?””
James didn’t answer.
And suddenly, I understood.
“The adoption papers.””
He nodded.
I stood up.
“Why would there be adoption papers?””
“Because Lauren convinced everyone you might not be able to care for Emma.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
James stood too.
“Claire, listen.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“She tried to take my baby?””
“No. She didn’t succeed.””
“But she tried.””
James looked devastated.
“Yes.””
I covered my mouth.
All those years.
All those family dinners.
All those fake smiles.
And Lauren had been waiting.
Waiting for a chance.
“She wanted Emma.””
James didn’t deny it.
“She thought she could raise her better.””
My phone rang.
Detective Harris.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
“Mrs. Walker, we need you to come in.””
“What happened?””
“We found the missing documents.””
I looked at James.
“Where?””
A pause.
“Your sister’s house.””
My heart sank.
“What did she do with them?””
Detective Harris was quiet.
Then:
“She altered them.””
My knees felt weak.
“Altered them how?””
“She changed dates.””
“Why?””
“She was trying to create evidence that you were not mentally capable of parenting after Emma’s birth.””
I closed my eyes.
Lauren wasn’t just attacking our present.
She had been rewriting our past.
“She planned this.””
“Yes.””
The detective’s voice became more serious.
“Mrs. Walker, there’s one more thing.””
“What?””
“We found a letter.””
“From who?””
“Your sister.””
“To who?””
A pause.
Then:
“To an attorney.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did it say?””
Detective Harris answered carefully.
“She wrote that once your marriage fell apart, she would become Emma’s guardian.””
The room went silent.
My fingers went cold.
James took my hand.
“She wanted us to fail.””
I looked at the phone.
At the empty hallway.
At the nursery where Emma slept.
Then Detective Harris said the final thing.
“The letter was written six months before Thanksgiving.””
I stopped breathing.
Six months.
Before Lauren ever touched Emma.
Before the dinner.
Before the fight.
Before anyone knew there would be a problem.
She had been planning.
The whole time.
And then Detective Harris added:
“Mrs. Walker…”
“Yes?””
“She wasn’t acting alone.””
I looked at James.
“Who was helping her?””
The answer came after a long pause.

And when I heard the name, my heart shattered.
“Your mother.””
