Chapter 14: The Plan Against James

The drive home was silent.

My mother’s words followed me like a shadow.

*She wants James gone.*

I looked at him.

He was focused on the road.

Calm.

Steady.

The same man who had stood up at Thanksgiving without hesitation.

The same man who held me together when everything else collapsed.

“What?””

I realized he noticed me staring.

I looked away.

“Nothing.””

“Claire.””

I sighed.

“I’m scared.””

His expression softened.

“Of Lauren?””

I shook my head.

“Of what she’s willing to do.””

He reached over and squeezed my hand.

“She already showed us.””

I nodded.

“But it keeps getting worse.””

“Yes.””

His honesty surprised me.

Then he added:

“And that means we stop reacting.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“We stop waiting for the next thing she does.””

He glanced at me.

“We make sure there is no next thing.””

The next morning, Rachel, our attorney, called.

“She’s escalating.””

My stomach dropped.

“What happened?””

“Lauren filed another motion.””

“For what?””

Rachel paused.

“Temporary guardianship.””

I closed my eyes.

“She actually did it.””

“Yes.””

James was beside me.

“Based on what?””

Rachel’s voice hardened.

“Her claim is that you and your husband are creating an unsafe environment because of your conflict with her.””

I almost laughed.

“She caused the conflict.””

“I know.””

Rachel continued.

“But legally, she is trying to create doubt.””

I looked at Emma playing on the floor.

“How long does this take?””

“If she gets a hearing, we need to be prepared.””

My chest tightened.

“What do we need?””

“Everything.””

That afternoon became a blur.

Medical records.

Messages.

Photos.

Security footage.

Every piece of our life suddenly became evidence.

And while we gathered proof of being good parents, Lauren was telling strangers we weren’t.

That evening, James found something.

“Claire.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He held his laptop.

“I found the original camera backup.””

My heart jumped.

“But Detective Harris said—”

“She found one file.””

He turned the screen.

“This is another.””

We watched.

The footage was from months earlier.

Before Thanksgiving.

Before the fight.

Lauren was in our house.

Again.

But this time, she wasn’t alone.

My mother stood beside her.

They were looking through documents.

Not casually.

Searching.

Then Lauren held up a folder.

The same folder.

Emma’s paperwork.

My hands covered my mouth.

The video continued.

My mother looked nervous.

Lauren didn’t.

She smiled.

Then she said something the audio captured clearly.

“Once James is out of the picture, Claire will have no choice.””

I froze.

James stopped the video.

Neither of us spoke.

The next words were impossible to misunderstand.

Lauren had never wanted to protect Emma.

She wanted to replace us.

The following day, we had the custody hearing.

Lauren arrived dressed perfectly.

Hair done.

Makeup flawless.

She looked like someone who had nothing to hide.

That was her talent.

Making lies look reasonable.

She sat across from us.

Then she smiled.

A small, confident smile.

Like she already knew the outcome.

During the hearing, her attorney spoke first.

“My client has serious concerns about the child’s environment.””

I looked at Lauren.

She looked back.

Almost sadly.

Like she was the one being hurt.

Then her attorney played a recording.

My voice.

From months earlier.

I was crying.

Talking to James after a difficult night with Emma.

The recording was edited.

Cut.

Manipulated.

But the words were mine.

“I don’t know if I’m good enough.””

The room went quiet.

I felt every eye on me.

Lauren looked down.

Pretending sympathy.

The judge looked at me.

“Mrs. Walker, can you explain this?””

I opened my mouth.

But before I could answer, James stood.

“Your Honor.””

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was calm.

“This recording is incomplete.””

Lauren’s attorney frowned.

“How would you know?””

James looked toward the screen.

“Because I have the full version.””

My heart stopped.

Rachel smiled slightly.

She had known.

James continued.

“And in the full recording, my wife says she’s afraid of failing because she loves our daughter so much.””

The room went silent.

Then James looked at Lauren.

“And the person who recorded her private conversation without permission is the same person asking this court to trust her.””

For the first time, Lauren’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Because she realized something.

Her perfect story was starting to fall apart.

Then Rachel stood.

“Your Honor, we have additional evidence.””

The judge looked at her.

“What evidence?””

Rachel placed a folder on the table.

“Evidence showing the petitioner has been planning this custody request for over six months.””

Lauren’s face went pale.

And then something happened that none of us expected.

Her own attorney turned toward her.

Confused.

May you like

Angry.

Because he had just realized he was defending someone who had lied to him too.
