Chapter 18: The Final Family Confession

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was afraid of Lauren.

Because I was afraid of how many truths were still hidden.

Every secret led to another.

Every answer created another question.

By morning, I was exhausted.

James found me sitting in Emma’s room.

“You need rest.””

I shook my head.

“I need the truth.””

He sat beside me.

“Then let’s get it.””

We went to my parents’ house.

This time, neither of us knocked.

My father opened the door.

He looked surprised.

Then he saw my face.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

My mother was in the kitchen.

When she saw the message, she immediately started crying.

“She told you.””

I stared.

“You knew?””

My mother sat down.

“I knew she would eventually use it.””

“What did you do?””

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the pain.

My mother covered her face.

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made choices.””

She looked at me.

“You’re right.””

My father stood silently.

For once, he didn’t try to explain.

My mother took a breath.

“When Emma was born, I was scared.””

I listened.

“You were struggling after the delivery.””

“I was recovering.””

“I know.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But Lauren convinced me that I was watching history repeat itself.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

My mother looked down.

“After your brother died, I became obsessed with preventing another loss.””

She swallowed.

“Lauren knew exactly how to use that fear.””

“So she convinced you I couldn’t be a mother.””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“And you believed her.””

“I did.””

The honesty hurt.

My mother continued.

“But then something happened.””

“What?””

“I saw James with Emma.””

I looked down.

“He reminded me of someone.””

“Who?””

“Your father.””

I looked at my dad.

My mother smiled sadly.

“Someone who would do anything to protect his family.””

The room went quiet.

“So why didn’t you stop?””

My mother cried.

“Because by then, Lauren had too much power.””

“What power?””

She looked at me.

“She had proof of things I had hidden.””

My father whispered:

“The letters.””

My mother nodded.

“She threatened to expose everything.””

I looked between them.

“All because of guilt.””

“Yes.””

My anger faded slightly.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I finally understood.

Fear had controlled this family for years.

But fear was not an excuse.

“I need you to understand something,” I said.

My mother looked at me.

“I love you.””

Her face broke.

“But I cannot trust you.””

She nodded through tears.

“I know.””

“And Emma will not be around anyone who chooses silence over protecting her.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“I understand.””

Then my father stepped forward.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He held out an envelope.

“I found this in Lauren’s old room.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why do you have it?””

“Because I knew she was hiding something.””

Inside was a letter.

Written by Lauren.

I read the first line.

And immediately knew.

*When Claire finally realizes James is the only person standing between me and what I deserve, it will already be too late.*

My hands shook.

I kept reading.

She had planned everything.

The family conflict.

The custody request.

The accusations.

But the final paragraph stopped me.

*The only mistake I made was underestimating Claire.*

I looked up.

For the first time, Lauren had admitted something.

She underestimated me.

My phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice was serious.

“We found Lauren.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

“She left town.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“She knows we have enough evidence.””

I waited.

“But there is something else.””

“What?””

Detective Harris hesitated.

“She left a message.””

“For who?””

“For you.””

My grip tightened.

“What did it say?””

The detective answered:

“She said she’s coming back one last time.””

I looked at James.

“When?””

A long pause.

“Tomorrow.””

May you like

Then Detective Harris said:

“She wants to meet Emma.””
