Chapter 5: The Story She Created

The next forty-eight hours felt like living inside someone else’s nightmare.

I woke up every morning expecting things to feel normal.

They didn’t.

There was always another message.

Another call.

Another reminder that Lauren had decided she was the victim.

The first message came from my aunt.

*I heard there was an argument. Are you okay?*

I replied carefully.

*Emma is okay. But Lauren hit her.*

The typing bubble appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally, my aunt wrote:

*I’m sure it wasn’t intentional.*

I stared at the screen.

Intentional.

That word.

Everyone wanted to discuss intentions.

Nobody wanted to discuss what actually happened.

Emma didn’t care if Lauren “meant” to hurt her.

Emma only knew that someone bigger than her had caused her pain.

That afternoon, I sat on the living room floor while Emma played with colorful blocks.

James was working at the kitchen table.

He had barely left my side since Thanksgiving.

“You should sleep,” I told him.

He looked up.

“So should you.””

I smiled sadly.

“Fair.””

For a moment, we were quiet.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked at it.

His jaw tightened.

“What now?””

He turned the screen toward me.

It was a message from one of his coworkers.

*Captain, just checking in. Heard there may be some personal accusations circulating. Let me know if you need anything.*

My stomach dropped.

“She contacted your work?””

James didn’t answer immediately.

That was my answer.

“James.””

“She called someone.””

“What did she say?””

He leaned back.

“She implied I threatened her.””

I felt sick.

“But you didn’t.””

“I know.””

His calmness scared me.

Not because he was cold.

Because I knew how much control it took.

“Why would she do this?””

James looked at Emma.

“Because she lost control of the situation.””

The next morning, my father showed up.

Alone.

That surprised me.

I opened the door but didn’t invite him in immediately.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

“I need to talk to you.””

I stepped aside.

He walked inside slowly.

His eyes immediately went to Emma.

“She’s beautiful.””

I nodded.

“She is.””

He stood there quietly for a while.

Then he said:

“I was wrong.””

Those three words caught me off guard.

My father had never been good at admitting mistakes.

“What changed?””

He looked down.

“Your sister came to my house last night.””

I waited.

“She told me James scared her.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

“What did you say?””

“I asked what happened.””

“And?””

My father looked embarrassed.

“She couldn’t explain.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She kept saying he was intimidating.””

I looked toward the kitchen.

“Because he told her to leave after she hit his daughter?””

My father nodded.

“I know.””

Silence filled the room.

Then he pulled something from his pocket.

A small envelope.

“What is that?””

He handed it to me.

“I found this in my mailbox this morning.””

I opened it.

Inside was a printed message.

My eyes scanned the words.

And my heart stopped.

It was a screenshot of a conversation between Lauren and someone else.

The message was short.

But enough.

*She’ll forgive me eventually. She always does.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

My father swallowed.

“I think she’s done this before.””

A chill ran through me.

“What?””

He looked away.

“Your cousin told me something.””

I waited.

“About two years ago, Lauren’s neighbor accused her of breaking something.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with this?””

“Nothing.””

He paused.

“Except Lauren told everyone the neighbor was unstable.””

I felt a strange heaviness in my chest.

Because suddenly, I wasn’t looking at one bad decision.

I was looking at a pattern.

My father continued.

“I should have seen it.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time in years, my father wasn’t defending Lauren.

He was afraid of her.

That night, after he left, James and I sat together on the couch.

“We need boundaries,” he said.

I nodded.

“I know.””

“No contact until we know what she’s going to do next.””

I agreed.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Is this Claire Walker?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Detective Harris.””

My entire body went still.

“Detective?””

“Yes.””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“I’m calling about the complaint filed against your husband.””

I looked at James.

His face changed.

The detective continued.

“I need to ask you some questions about what happened on Thanksgiving.””

I swallowed.

“Okay.””

Another pause.

Then her voice lowered.

“Mrs. Walker…”

“Yes?””

“Before we continue, there is something you should know.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“The complaint your sister filed isn’t the only report we received.””

I stopped breathing.

“What other report?””

The detective was silent for a moment.

May you like

Then she answered.

“One involving your daughter.””
