Chapter 9: The Woman Who Wanted My Life

The video stopped.

Nobody moved.

The storage room suddenly felt too small.

Too quiet.

I stared at the frozen screen.

Vanessa’s face was still there.

A face I had seen every day for eight years.

A face I once forced myself to call family.

My hands shook.

“She planned this.””

My mother nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My father sat down.

Like the weight of the truth had finally become too heavy.

“I didn’t know everything.””

I looked at him.

“You knew enough.””

He looked away.

That was the first time he didn’t argue.

The first time he didn’t defend himself.

My mother continued searching through the box.

“There’s more.””

She pulled out another folder.

Inside were copies of emails.

Messages between Vanessa and someone named Richard Cole.

I recognized the name.

He was my father’s business partner.

“What is this?””

My mother read through them.

Her face changed.

“She wasn’t just after the inheritance.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

She handed me the papers.

I read the first message.

*Once Angela is gone, David will finally have no reason to fight.*

The second message.

*The girl will inherit everything eventually. We just need control until then.*

The third message.

My hands went cold.

*Maya doesn’t need to know who her real guardian is.*

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

“Dad.””

He looked terrified.

“Maya…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“What does that mean?””

My mother took the papers.

“There’s something missing.””

“What?””

“The original guardianship documents.””

I stared.

“Guardianship?””

My father stood.

“Don’t.””

My mother looked at him.

“You have to tell her.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

I stepped between them.

“Tell me.””

My father looked at me.

And for the first time in my life, I saw him completely break.

“When your mother disappeared, Vanessa convinced me to sign temporary guardianship papers.””

My heart sank.

“Temporary?””

He nodded.

“She said it was only until things calmed down.””

“And?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“She changed them.””

The room went silent.

I felt numb.

“You gave her legal control over me?””

“No.””

He stepped forward.

“I never wanted that.””

“But you signed.””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

It wasn’t because anything was funny.

It was because the truth had become impossible to hold.

“You signed away my mother.””

My father’s eyes filled.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made choices.””

The words hurt him.

Good.

Because they hurt me for eight years.

My mother wrapped an arm around me.

Then the sound of footsteps came from outside.

Everyone froze.

My father looked toward the door.

“We’re not alone.””

The handle moved.

Slowly.

My mother reached for the camera.

The door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

But she wasn’t alone.

A man stood behind her.

Older.

Expensive suit.

Cold expression.

Richard Cole.

My father’s former business partner.

He smiled.

“You really should have left the past buried.””

My mother stepped forward.

“You followed us.””

Richard shrugged.

“You were making this difficult.””

I stared at him.

“Who are you?””

He looked at me.

And his smile widened.

“I’m the person who has spent eight years making sure you never learned the truth.””

My father moved in front of me.

“Richard, this ends now.””

Richard laughed.

“No, David.””

He looked at me.

“It ends when Maya learns what her mother actually did.””

My mother went pale.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard pulled out a file.

A single document.

Then he said:

“Because Angela Brooks wasn’t running away from you.””

May you like

He looked directly at me.

“She was running away because she discovered your father was the one who betrayed her first.””
