Chapter 10: The Lie Behind My Mother’s Disappearance
The words hung in the air.
*Your father was the one who betrayed her first.*
I looked at my dad.
Not Richard.
Not Vanessa.
Him.
Because even after everything I had learned, some part of me still wanted to believe there was a line he wouldn’t cross.
Some boundary he would never break.
My father looked at Richard with pure anger.
“You don’t get to rewrite history.””
Richard smiled.
“Interesting choice of words from you.””
Vanessa stepped into the storage room.
She looked different now.
The confidence was gone.
The perfect stepmother image had cracked.
“You’re wasting time,” she said.
My mother turned toward her.
“You’re afraid.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Afraid of what?””
“The truth.””
My mother’s voice was steady.
“For eight years, you controlled the story. You told Maya I abandoned her. You told David I was dangerous. You convinced everyone I was the problem.””
Richard lifted the file.
“And she was.””
My mother looked at him.
“No.””
He opened the folder.
Inside was a document.
“Angela Brooks was investigating financial crimes connected to her own husband.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at my father.
“What?””
My father’s face changed.
Richard continued.
“Your mother discovered David had been moving money from the family business into accounts she didn’t recognize.””
My father stepped forward.
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
Richard smiled.
“You never could.””
My mother looked at my father.
“Is it true?””
My father didn’t answer.
And that silence felt louder than anything else.
I felt something inside me break.
“Dad.””
He finally looked at me.
“I was going to fix it.””
I stared.
“You keep saying that.””
My voice shook.
“You keep acting like every horrible thing you did was just a mistake waiting to be repaired.””
He looked away.
“I was scared.””
My mother laughed bitterly.
“Fear doesn’t excuse betrayal.””
Richard walked closer.
“Your father thought he could hide the money temporarily. He thought he could recover it before anyone noticed.””
I looked at my father.
“Did you?””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
The answer landed like a punch.
My mother closed her eyes.
“How much?””
My father didn’t respond.
“How much money did you take?””
“Not from you.””
My mother’s face hardened.
“That’s not an answer.””
He whispered the amount.
I didn’t even understand the number.
It was too large.
Too impossible.
My grandmother’s inheritance.
The family accounts.
The money meant for me.
All tangled together.
“So when Grandma found out…”
My mother finished the sentence.
“She wrote the warning letter.””
I looked at the old documents.
My grandmother had known.
She had seen what was happening.
And she had tried to protect me.
Richard leaned against the wall.
“But David made one mistake.””
Everyone looked at him.
“He trusted Vanessa.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Richard.””
“No.””
He ignored her.
“She convinced him Angela was destroying the family. She convinced him the only way to save everything was to remove Angela.””
My stomach twisted.
“Remove?””
My mother looked at me.
“That was the night I disappeared.””
The room went quiet.
She took a deep breath.
“I came home and found my bags packed.””
I listened.
“I found divorce papers on the table.””
Her eyes filled.
“And I found David had already signed a statement saying I was unstable.””
I looked at my father.
“Why?””
His face crumpled.
“Because Vanessa told me you would be safer.””
I stared at him.
“You believed her.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt worse than a lie.
My mother stepped closer.
“But when I refused to leave without Maya, things changed.””
“What happened?””
She looked at Richard.
“He threatened me.””
Richard rolled his eyes.
“She’s exaggerating.””
My mother pointed at the camera.
“You know she recorded everything.””
For the first time, Richard looked nervous.
I noticed.
And so did everyone else.
My mother picked up the camera.
“You didn’t know my mother had copies.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“What?””
My mother looked at me.
“Your grandmother wasn’t just protecting you.””
She held the camera tightly.
“She was protecting the evidence.””
The storage room fell silent.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at it.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
My blood turned cold.
It was a photograph.
A photograph of my mother leaving the storage facility.
Taken minutes ago.
