Chapter 12: The Witness Who Returned
My mother’s face changed.
Not fear.
Not surprise.
Something deeper.
Something painful.
“Who is it?””
I whispered.
She didn’t answer.
The voice came again.
“Angela, please.””
My mother stepped closer to the door.
“Stay behind me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She looked back.
“Maya.””
“I spent my whole life being kept away from the truth.””
I stood beside her.
“I’m not hiding anymore.””
For a moment, she just looked at me.
Then she nodded.
Slowly.
She opened the door.
A woman stood outside.
Older.
Tired.
Holding a small purse against her chest.
My mother stared.
“Claire?””
The woman’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.””
My mother stepped backward.
“No.””
Claire looked down.
“I should have come sooner.””
I didn’t understand.
“Who is she?””
My mother couldn’t answer.
Claire looked at me.
“I’m your mother’s former attorney.””
The words immediately made me suspicious.
“Former?””
She nodded.
“Because I failed her.””
My mother’s expression hardened.
“You knew.””
Claire looked away.
“Yes.””
“Knew what?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“Everything.””
The room went silent.
My mother’s voice dropped.
“How long?””
“Since the beginning.””
I felt anger rise inside me.
“How could you know someone was destroying her life and do nothing?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Because I was threatened.””
My mother laughed bitterly.
“Everyone was threatened.””
“No.””
Claire looked at me.
“Not like this.””
She opened her purse.
Inside was a small flash drive.
“I kept a copy.””
My mother stared.
“A copy of what?””
Claire looked at her.
“The original divorce evidence.””
My stomach tightened.
“Original?””
She nodded.
“The documents David submitted were altered.””
My mother went still.
“What?””
Claire looked at me.
“Your father didn’t just lie about your mother.””
She paused.
“He forged evidence.””
The room felt like it tilted.
My mother grabbed the flash drive.
“Why now?””
Claire looked toward the hallway.
“Because Richard knows I have it.””
My blood ran cold.
“He found you?””
She nodded.
“He came to my house yesterday.””
My mother immediately understood.
“You’re the reason he’s rushing.””
Claire looked at her.
“He knows the truth is about to come out.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“So this proves everything?””
Claire hesitated.
That hesitation worried me.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“It proves what happened eight years ago.””
“Then why do you look scared?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Because there is one thing I never told your mother.””
My mother stared.
“What?””
Claire looked down.
“The night you disappeared…”
She swallowed.
“You weren’t the only person they planned to remove.””
The same words.
The same warning.
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Claire looked at me.
“It means Vanessa wasn’t only trying to take your inheritance.””
She took a breath.
“She was trying to take your identity.””
I felt a chill.
“My identity?””
Claire nodded.
“She had documents prepared.””
“What documents?””
She whispered:
“Documents that would make it look like Maya Brooks never belonged to Angela Brooks at all.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“No.””
Claire nodded sadly.
“Yes.””
Then my phone buzzed.
Again.
Unknown number.
I looked down.
A new message appeared.
But this time there was no threat.
Only a photograph.
A hospital bracelet.
With my name printed on it.
*MAYA BROOKS.*
May you like
And underneath was a message:
*Ask your mother why she never told you the truth about the day you were born.*
