Chapter 15: The Family That Was Built On Lies

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat by the hotel window and watched the city lights blur through the glass.

For years, I thought I was searching for my mother.

I was wrong.

I was searching for myself.

Every memory I had was suddenly filled with questions.

My father helping with homework.

Vanessa making dinner.

Family vacations.

Birthdays.

Were they real?

Or were they just scenes in a story they created for me?

My mother found me sitting there before sunrise.

She didn’t say anything at first.

She just sat beside me.

Like she used to when I was little.

Except now, we were both different.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I looked outside.

“For what?””

“For all the years you spent wondering.””

My eyes burned.

“I did wonder.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“I wondered if you hated me.””

Her face broke.

“Never.””

“I wondered if I wasn’t enough.””

She grabbed my hand.

“Maya.””

Her voice cracked.

“You were always enough.””

That was the moment I finally cried.

Not because I was weak.

Because I had been holding eight years of pain inside.

My mother held me.

And for the first time since she returned, it felt like I had my mother back.

But the peace didn’t last.

Because the truth still needed to be faced.

Claire arrived an hour later.

She looked nervous.

“There’s something you need to know.””

I almost laughed.

Another secret.

Of course.

“What now?””

She placed a folder on the table.

“This is from Daniel Carter’s estate.””

My mother looked confused.

“Daniel left something?””

Claire nodded.

“For Maya.””

My heart stopped.

“For me?””

“Yes.””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But my name was written clearly.

*Dear Maya,*

I read silently.

If you are reading this, then I never got the chance to meet you.

I swallowed.

I spent years trying to make sure you would have a future.

My hands tightened.

Your mother is the strongest person I have ever known. If she is not beside you, it is not because she chose to leave.

I looked at my mother.

She closed her eyes.

The letter continued.

There are people who will try to tell you that your life belongs to them. It doesn’t.

The words echoed my grandmother.

You are not a possession. You are not an inheritance. You are a person.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

And my heart stopped.

The reason they are fighting over you is not only money.

I looked up.

Claire’s face was pale.

My mother whispered:

I did.

Your grandmother discovered that the Brooks family business was built on stolen assets. The inheritance was never just money. It was proof.

I froze.

Proof.

Of what?

The final line answered.

Whoever controls Maya controls the evidence.

I looked at Claire.

“Evidence of what?””

She didn’t answer.

Because my phone started ringing.

Unknown number.

Again.

Everyone went silent.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Maya Brooks?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“You don’t know me, but I knew your biological father.””

My grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

The man breathed heavily.

“I’m the reason Daniel Carter died.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

His voice lowered.

“And I’m calling because Vanessa is looking for something your father hid before he was killed.””

I stood frozen.

“What did he hide?””

The man was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“The original proof that your entire family fortune was stolen.””

A pause.

“And Maya…”

His voice became urgent.

“You need to find it before Vanessa does.””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Then my mother whispered the words none of us wanted to hear.

“Your father didn’t just hide the truth.””

May you like

She looked at me.

“He hid it inside our house.””
