Chapter 18: The Last Person We Trusted

The darkness was complete.

No lights.

No sound.

Just breathing.

Mine.

My mother’s.

Vanessa’s.

And someone else.

Someone moving upstairs.

My mother grabbed my hand.

“Maya, stay close.””

Vanessa stood frozen.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear on her face.

Not the fake fear she had used before.

Real fear.

“Who is here?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

Then footsteps started down the stairs.

Slow.

Controlled.

A flashlight turned on.

The beam moved across the room.

And stopped on us.

Claire stood there.

Holding a small black bag.

My mother stared.

“You.””

Claire looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry.””

Those words again.

Everyone always said sorry after destroying something.

My mother stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Claire didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

I felt numb.

“Everyone knew everything except me.””

Claire looked at me.

“Maya…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Don’t say my name like you care.””

The words hurt her.

Good.

Because I was hurt.

Claire lowered her eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s everyone’s excuse.””

Vanessa moved toward Claire.

“You said you would handle this.””

Claire looked at her.

“You ruined everything.””

I froze.

Because that wasn’t the conversation between enemies.

That was the conversation between partners.

My mother noticed too.

“You worked together.””

Claire didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“She was the one who helped create the plan.””

My stomach dropped.

Claire looked at Vanessa with hatred.

“You don’t get to pretend you’re innocent.””

“I never said I was.””

The honesty shocked me.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I made choices.””

My mother stared.

“You destroyed a family.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I exposed one.””

I shook my head.

“You’re unbelievable.””

Claire stepped closer.

“There’s something you need to know.””

I looked at her.

“What now?””

She opened the black bag.

Inside was a folder.

Different from all the others.

Older.

More worn.

“This is the original evidence your grandmother collected.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Then why hide it?””

Claire looked at her.

“Because your grandmother wasn’t only investigating David.””

My heart pounded.

“Who else?””

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“Daniel Carter.””

I froze.

“What?””

Claire took a breath.

“Your biological father wasn’t just a victim.””

My mother’s face changed.

“What are you saying?””

Claire opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Contracts.

Photographs.

Letters.

And one name appeared over and over.

Daniel Carter.

“He was involved in the same company.””

I stared.

“No.””

Claire nodded.

“He helped build the system before he tried to expose it.””

My mother looked devastated.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire looked at her.

“You never knew everything about him.””

I felt sick.

Another secret.

Another person who wasn’t who I thought.

Claire handed me a letter.

From Daniel.

I opened it.

Maya,

If you ever find this, then the truth has become more complicated than I wanted.

My hands shook.

I made mistakes before I became the person your mother loved.

I kept reading.

But when I discovered what they were doing, I tried to fix it.

The next line stopped me.

I was killed because I found out who was really controlling everything.

I looked up.

“Who?””

Claire went silent.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“The same person who has been watching Maya her entire life.””

The room froze.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

This time, not from an unknown number.

From a saved contact.

A contact I hadn’t heard from in years.

*Dad.*

I opened it.

One sentence appeared.

*Maya, don’t trust any of them. The truth about your mother is worse than you know.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

My father was alive.

And he was calling me.
