Chapter 14: The Father I Never Knew

I read the sentence again.

And again.

The words refused to make sense.

*David Brooks is not the man Maya thinks he is.*

My first thought was that it was impossible.

My second thought was that eight years of impossible things had already happened.

I looked at Claire.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

My mother looked at the letter.

“I never saw this.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

“Why?””

“Because your grandmother hid it.””

My mother stepped closer.

“She knew?””

Claire sighed.

“Eleanor knew more than anyone.””

I felt dizzy.

My grandmother.

The woman who had hugged me.

The woman who had left me warnings.

She had been carrying secrets my entire life.

I sat down.

“Just tell me.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I’m tired of finding pieces.””

My voice shook.

“I need the whole truth.””

Claire took a breath.

“David Brooks was not your biological father.””

The room went silent.

I felt like I had stopped breathing.

My mother looked just as shocked as me.

“What?””

Claire looked at her.

“You didn’t know?””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

I stared at the floor.

Everything I believed about myself suddenly felt unstable.

“My entire life…”

My mother reached for my hand.

“Maya.””

I pulled back.

Not because I didn’t love her.

Because I didn’t know what was real anymore.

“Who is my father?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Claire said:

“His name was Daniel Carter.””

The name meant nothing.

And somehow, that hurt.

Because someone had existed.

Someone connected to me.

And I never knew.

“What happened to him?””

Claire looked away.

“He died.””

“When?””

“Eight years ago.””

The timing made my stomach drop.

“The same year my mother disappeared?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

My mother whispered:

“No.””

She looked at Claire.

“How?””

Claire hesitated.

“That’s the part I never proved.””

My anger returned.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I stood.

“You all knew pieces.””

I pointed at the documents.

“You had evidence.””

I looked at my mother.

“You had reasons.””

I looked at Claire.

“You had proof.””

My voice broke.

“And I had nothing.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother stood.

“You’re right.””

I looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“You deserved the truth.””

She picked up the letter.

“Your grandmother tried to leave it for you.””

She turned it over.

There was another note on the back.

A handwritten message.

I read it aloud.

“Maya, your blood is yours. Your name is yours. Never let anyone convince you that your existence belongs to them.””

My eyes filled.

Because it sounded exactly like her.

My grandmother.

Always protecting me.

Even after she was gone.

Claire looked at the flash drive.

“There’s one more file.””

I stared.

“What now?””

She clicked it.

A video appeared.

The date.

Eight years ago.

The day my mother disappeared.

My mother immediately recognized the location.

“Our old house.””

The video opened.

The camera shook.

Someone was recording secretly.

A man’s voice appeared.

David.

My father.

“I don’t know if this is the right thing.””

My heart tightened.

Then Vanessa’s voice answered.

“You don’t have a choice anymore.””

I froze.

The video continued.

David sounded afraid.

“She’s my daughter.””

Vanessa replied:

“No, David.””

A pause.

Then:

“She’s the key.””

My mother covered her mouth.

The video continued.

“We don’t need Angela anymore,” Vanessa said.

“We just need Maya.””

My blood turned cold.

The screen flickered.

Then David asked the question that changed everything.

“What if she finds out?””

Vanessa answered:

“She won’t.””

A pause.

Then the words that made my entire body go numb.

“Because by the time she’s old enough to understand, she’ll already believe we saved her.””

The video stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire looked at me.

“Maya…”

I stared at the frozen screen.

“They never wanted me to know my mother.””

May you like

My voice was barely a whisper.

“They wanted me to belong to them.””
