Chapter 5: The Secret in the Documents

Adrian didn’t speak after Vanessa left.

He just stood there.

A man watching his carefully created world collapse.

I almost felt sympathy.

Almost.

“You knew,” he said.

I looked at him.

“Knew what?””

“That Vanessa was lying.””

“No.””

He looked confused.

“I didn’t.””

I walked toward the window.

“I trusted both of you.””

That seemed to hurt him more than anger.

Because anger meant I still cared.

Trust meant he had destroyed something valuable.

“I thought you were hiding something,” he admitted.

I turned.

“And you decided I deserved punishment?””

His silence answered.

The next morning, my father’s legal team uncovered everything.

Vanessa had manipulated Adrian for months.

She convinced him that I was planning to expose his company.

She convinced him that divorcing me would protect his reputation.

But the biggest revelation was hidden inside the financial records.

Vanessa wasn’t just an affair partner.

She had connections to a competing company.

A company that wanted Adrian’s business.

She never loved him.

She wanted control.

When Adrian learned the truth, he came back to the estate.

Again.

But this time, he wasn’t angry.

He was broken.

“I was stupid,” he said.

I remained silent.

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“I hurt you.””

I touched the scar on my wrist.

“You did.””

“I can fix this.””

“No.””

His eyes lifted.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“Some things cannot be repaired.””

He swallowed.

“I love you.””

The words would have destroyed me months ago.

Now they only sounded empty.

“Do you love me?””

He stepped forward.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you believe the worst about me?””

He had no answer.

Because love without trust was just a beautiful word.

Nothing more.

My father entered the room.

Adrian immediately straightened.

The billionaire CEO who once intimidated everyone suddenly looked small.

“Mr. Ashford—”

My father raised a hand.

“Don’t speak to me about business.””

Adrian lowered his head.

“I made mistakes.””

My father looked at him.

“No. You made choices.””

That was the difference.

Mistakes happened.

Choices revealed people.

Adrian left that day without another word.

Months later, his company was sold.

Not destroyed.

Not ruined.

Just taken away from the man who proved he couldn’t protect it.

As for me, I rebuilt my life.

Not as Adrian Vale’s wife.

Not as Daniel Ashford’s daughter.

As Lillian.

A woman who finally understood her own worth.

One year later, I received a letter.

No return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

Adrian standing outside the old mansion.

Alone.

And beneath the picture were six words:

*He finally knows the truth.*

I turned the photograph over.

There was one more sentence.

One name.

A name that made my heart stop.

May you like

Because Adrian hadn’t been the only person hiding a secret.

And the person who sent that letter was someone I thought had been gone forever.
