Chapter 2: The Name I Buried
My father did not raise his voice.
That was what frightened people about him.
Daniel Ashford had built an empire without ever needing to shout. His name appeared on skyscrapers, hospitals, technology companies, and investment firms around the world.
But to me, he was simply Dad.
The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.
The man who stayed awake all night when I had nightmares.
The man who begged me not to marry Adrian.
“I need you to leave that house,” he said through the phone.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
I looked around the grand hall where Adrian had humiliated me.
“I can’t leave yet.””
“Lillian.””
“I need him to understand.””
A pause.
Then my father sighed.
“You always had your mother’s stubbornness.””
A broken laugh escaped me.
“My mother would have told me to fight.””
“She would have.””
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had hidden from the Ashford name.
When I met Adrian at a charity event, I never told him who I was. I introduced myself only as Lillian. No family name.
No inheritance. No connections.
I wanted to know if someone could love me without knowing my bank account.
I thought Adrian was that person.
I was wrong.
Adrian watched me carefully.
“What are you doing?”” he asked.
I ended the call.
“Nothing.””
Vanessa laughed.
“She’s bluffing.””
Adrian nodded.
“She always was dramatic.””
I looked at him.
Always.
That word hurt.
Because he knew nothing about me.
Not the real me.
Not the woman who spent nights reviewing contracts with her father.
Not the woman who quietly bought shares in Adrian’s failing company because she believed in his dream.
Not the woman who convinced investors to trust him.
He thought I was a burden.
“Adrian,” I said quietly.
He looked surprised.
Maybe because I hadn’t spoken his name with confidence in years.
“Yes?””
“Do you remember the first day we met?””
His expression softened slightly.
For one second, I saw the man I married.
Then Vanessa touched his arm.
And the moment disappeared.
“You’re trying to distract me.””
“No,” I said.
“I’m reminding myself that you weren’t always like this.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You made your choice.””
I almost smiled.
“My choice?””
“Yes. You lied to me.””
The accusation was unbelievable.
“I hid my family name because I wanted a real marriage.””
Vanessa frowned.
“Family name?””
I said nothing.
Adrian looked annoyed.
“Don’t start inventing stories.””
I slowly pushed myself up from the floor.
My knees shook.
Vanessa stepped back.
“You’re standing?””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
I looked at her.
“After everything, I’m still standing.””
The security guards appeared at the entrance.
Adrian had called them earlier.
Of course he had.
“Take her upstairs,” he ordered.
The guards hesitated.
They had worked for my family before they worked for Adrian.
They knew.
One of them lowered his eyes.
“Mrs. Vale…”
Adrian snapped.
“She is not staying here.””
I turned toward him.
“Neither are you.””
Everyone froze.
Adrian laughed.
“You really think you have power?””
I walked past him.
But before reaching the stairs, I stopped.
“Tomorrow morning, check your company accounts.””
His smile faded.
“What?””
“You’ll find something missing.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“She’s threatening us?””
“No,” I said.
I looked at Adrian one final time.
“I’m warning you.””
That night, locked inside the guest room where Adrian had ordered me to stay, I cleaned my wounds myself.
The woman staring back at me in the mirror looked unfamiliar.
But she was not weak.
My phone buzzed.
A message from my father.
*I have started.*
Another message arrived seconds later.
*By sunrise, Adrian Vale will know who he married.*
I stared out the window.
Below, Adrian and Vanessa laughed together near the garden.
They thought they had won.
They had no idea that the entire foundation beneath their lives had already begun collapsing.
Then my phone rang again.
This time, it wasn’t my father.
It was Adrian’s lawyer.
May you like
And his first words made my blood run cold.
“Mrs. Ashford… we need to discuss what your husband has been hiding from you.””
