Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Lie
By noon, Adrian’s name was everywhere.
Not because of success.
Because of scandal.
News outlets reported investigations into his company. Investors demanded answers. Former employees suddenly became willing to speak.
The empire Adrian bragged about building was shaking.
I watched the reports from my father’s private office.
A place I had avoided for years.
The walls were covered with photographs.
My childhood.
My mother.
My father holding me after my first school performance.
A life I abandoned because I wanted to prove I could be loved without a famous last name.
My father entered quietly.
“You look tired.””
I looked up.
“I feel tired.””
He sat across from me.
“Are you regretting calling me?””
I thought about Adrian’s face.
The shock.
The fear.
The betrayal.
“No.””
My father nodded.
“Good.””
Then his expression softened.
“But revenge is not the same as healing.””
I looked away.
“I know.””
“Then what do you want?””
That question was harder.
Because beneath all the anger was grief.
I wanted my husband back.
The man who danced with me in the kitchen.
The man who wrote me letters when we were dating.
The man who promised forever.
But that man had chosen to disappear.
“I want him to know what he destroyed,” I whispered.
My father reached across the table.
“Then make sure he knows.””
That evening, Adrian came to the Ashford estate.
Security almost stopped him.
Almost.
My father allowed him inside.
I stood in the library when Adrian entered.
He looked different.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a frightened man.
“Lillian.””
I hated how familiar my name sounded in his mouth.
“What do you want?””
He looked at my father.
Then back at me.
“You’re an Ashford.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
I laughed quietly.
“That’s your question?””
His face tightened.
“I deserved to know.””
“No, Adrian.””
I stepped closer.
“You deserved to love me without knowing.””
He had no answer.
Because he knew I was right.
Vanessa appeared behind him.
She had followed him.
Of course she had.
“You’re destroying him over a mistake.””
I turned.
“A mistake?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“You helped him hurt me.””
Her silence confirmed everything.
Adrian looked at her.
“What does she mean?””
Vanessa froze.
I noticed.
And so did he.
The truth had finally entered the room.
“You told him I was barren,” I said.
Vanessa swallowed.
“I was angry.””
“You told him I married him for money.””
“I was trying to protect myself.””
“You lied about me.””
She looked away.
Adrian’s face darkened.
“Vanessa.””
She stepped back.
“Adrian, don’t listen to her.””
But he was listening.
For the first time, he was actually listening.
My phone buzzed.
A message from my father’s assistant.
I read it.
Then I looked at Adrian.
“What?””
I locked my phone.
“Your divorce petition has been rejected.””
His eyes widened.
“What?””
“Because the documents contain forged evidence.””
The room became silent.
Adrian looked toward Vanessa.
Then toward me.
“Who forged them?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I already knew.
And apparently, so did Vanessa.
Her face turned pale.
Then she whispered:
“It wasn’t supposed to go this far.””
Adrian stared at her.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa stepped back.
And for the first time, the woman who thought she had won looked terrified.
Because Adrian finally realized something.
May you like
The woman standing beside him had never been his victory.
She had been his downfall.
