Chapter 11: The Monster Behind the Mask
Vanessa arrived at the Ashford estate just before midnight.
Not with confidence.
Not with the arrogance she once carried when she stood beside Adrian and watched me bleed on the marble floor.
She arrived shaking.
Her designer coat was torn.
Her makeup was ruined.
For the first time, she looked like someone who understood fear.
Security brought her into the library.
She looked at me first.
And immediately looked away.
Maybe she was ashamed.
Maybe she was afraid.
I wasn’t sure which one I preferred.
“Lillian,” Adrian said quietly.
I looked at him.
“You brought her here?””
“She has information.””
I laughed softly.
“Everyone suddenly has information.””
The words hurt him.
Good.
Some wounds needed to be felt.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I know you hate me.””
I said nothing.
Because hate required energy.
And I had spent too much of mine on people who didn’t deserve it.
“I deserve that,” she whispered.
My father stood near the window.
“You have five minutes.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Alexander is not who you think he is.””
I stared at her.
“You helped him.””
Her eyes filled.
“I didn’t know what he was.””
Adrian’s voice turned cold.
“You lied to me for months.””
She looked at him.
“I was scared.””
“Scared enough to destroy my marriage?””
Her face tightened.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
She looked at me.
“When Alexander approached me, he knew exactly what to say.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew I wanted power.””
I didn’t respond.
At least she was finally telling the truth.
“He promised me that after Adrian divorced you, he would make Adrian the head of the Vale empire.””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“He was using me.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“He was using everyone.””
She reached into her bag.
Then she placed a small device on the table.
“A recording.””
My father picked it up.
“What is this?””
“Alexander’s conversations.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You recorded him?””
“I realized too late that I was disposable.””
The recording began.
Alexander’s voice filled the room.
Cold.
Calm.
“I don’t care what happens to Adrian after the transfer. He was always just a tool.””
Adrian froze.
My heart tightened.
Alexander continued.
“Once Lillian signs the inheritance documents, everything returns to me.””
The recording ended.
Silence.
Because the truth was finally undeniable.
Adrian sat down slowly.
For the first time, I saw him understand the damage.
Not just what he lost.
What he was used for.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“Why give us this?””
She looked at me.
“Because I know what it feels like to think you’re special to him.””
Her voice broke.
“And then realize you were just another piece on his board.””
I didn’t forgive her.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
But I understood.
Sometimes people became monsters because they followed the wrong person.
That didn’t erase what they did.
But it explained it.
My father turned to Adrian.
“We need to move quickly.””
Adrian looked up.
“What happens now?””
“Alexander will try to force Lillian into signing over her assets.””
Adrian nodded.
“He has a weakness.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
Adrian stood.
“My father always believed he was smarter than everyone else.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“He never planned for someone to betray him.””
I looked at him.
“Are you talking about yourself?””
“No.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“I’m talking about everyone he underestimated.””
For the first time, Adrian and I stood on the same side.
Not as husband and wife.
Not as lovers.
As two people who had finally seen the same enemy.
The next morning, Alexander sent his first message.
A video.
Of him sitting in my mother’s old office.
The place where she had discovered his crimes.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Lillian.””
I watched without blinking.
“You spent your whole life believing you were protected.””
His smile was cold.
“You weren’t.””
He leaned closer.
“You were hidden.””
My hands tightened.
“Come to my office tomorrow.””
The video ended.
Then one final message appeared.
*Come alone, or you’ll never know why your mother really died.*
I stared at the screen.
My father immediately said:
“No.””
But I already knew.
Alexander wanted me angry.
He wanted me emotional.
He wanted me to make mistakes.
And that was exactly why I couldn’t.
I looked at Adrian.
“Get ready.””
He frowned.
“For what?””
I stood.
“To end this.””
Because Alexander Ashford had spent years controlling the game.
He just didn’t realize one thing.

The person he thought he created…
Was the person who would destroy him.
