Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal

The name on the message belonged to the last person I expected.

Marcus.

My father’s closest advisor.

The man who had worked beside him for twenty years.

The man who attended my childhood birthdays.

The man who helped manage the Ashford empire.

I showed my father.

His reaction was immediate.

“No.””

One word.

Pure disbelief.

“Dad.””

“Marcus saved this company.””

I handed him the evidence attached to the message.

Financial transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Private communications.

My father read every page.

And slowly, his expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

Because betrayal from strangers was expected.

Betrayal from family was something else.

Marcus arrived at the estate that afternoon.

He walked in confidently.

Until he saw the documents on the table.

Then he stopped.

“You found them.””

My father looked at him.

“How long?””

Marcus sighed.

“Long enough.””

The room went silent.

“How could you?””

My father’s voice was quieter than I had ever heard.

Marcus looked away.

“Because you were never supposed to win.””

I felt my anger rise.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because Evelyn was supposed to choose Alexander.””

There it was again.

The obsession.

The belief that people were possessions.

“She loved Daniel,” I said.

Marcus smiled sadly.

“She ruined everything.””

My father stepped forward.

“You helped him.””

“Yes.””

“For money?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

His eyes became cold.

“For revenge.””

The confession was almost unbelievable.

Marcus had been Alexander’s childhood friend.

He believed Daniel stole everything from Alexander.

The company.

The woman he loved.

The life he wanted.

“So you spent twenty years destroying my family?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I spent twenty years correcting a mistake.””

I felt disgust.

“You’re exactly like him.””

His expression changed.

Because he knew I was right.

My father called the authorities.

This time, Marcus didn’t resist.

Before leaving, he looked at me.

“You should know something.””

I ignored him.

But he continued.

“Alexander never wanted your money.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He wanted you.””

The words chilled me.

“Why?””

Marcus smiled.

“Because you were the one thing your mother chose over him.””

After he left, nobody spoke.

That night, I stood outside my mother’s garden.

The place where she used to sit.

Where she dreamed.

Where she lost.

But also where she loved.

Adrian found me there.

“You okay?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He nodded.

“Fair.””

We stood quietly.

Then he said:

“I’m leaving.””

I turned.

“Leaving where?””

“London.””

I was surprised.

“Why?””

“Because I need to rebuild something that isn’t based on lies.””

For the first time, I believed him.

“I hope you do.””

He smiled slightly.

“Me too.””

Before he left, he stopped.

“Lillian.””

“Yes?””

“Your father was right.””

“About what?””

“That I never deserved you.””

I didn’t answer.

Because maybe he was right.

Maybe love had existed.

But sometimes love arrived too late.

The next morning, my father handed me a sealed envelope.

“What is this?””

“Your mother’s final letter.””

I froze.

“You had another one?””

He nodded.

“She told me to give it to you when the danger was gone.””

I opened it.

The first line made my heart stop.

*My beautiful daughter, if you are reading this, you survived them.*

I kept reading.

And then I found the truth my mother had hidden from everyone.

A truth that changed everything.

Because Alexander wasn’t the only reason she died.

There was someone else.

Someone she trusted.

May you like

Someone she loved.

And my mother had written the name herself.
