Chapter 3: The Empire Behind the Curtain
The lawyer arrived at 7:00 a.m.
Adrian had always liked being the first person awake in the house. He said successful people controlled the morning.
That morning, he woke up to discover someone else controlled his future.
I sat in the dining room wearing a simple black dress.
Not because I wanted to look powerful.
Because black was the only color that matched how I felt.
The lawyer placed a thick envelope on the table.
“Mrs. Ashford—”
“Lillian is fine.””
He hesitated.
“No. Your legal name matters now.””
That sentence alone told me something was wrong.
I opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Loans.
Contracts.
Signatures.
Adrian’s company had been hiding serious financial problems.
And the worst part?
My signature was attached to several agreements.
Except I had never signed them.
My hands went cold.
“He forged my name.””
The lawyer nodded.
“We believe so.””
I stared at the pages.
Three years ago, Adrian’s company was close to bankruptcy.
Then suddenly, after our wedding, banks approved massive funding.
Everyone called it a miracle.
It wasn’t.
My father arranged those deals through private channels.
But Adrian never knew.
Because I asked my father not to tell him.
I wanted Adrian to believe he earned everything.
I wanted him to be proud.
Instead, he used my trust as a weapon.
The dining room doors opened.
Adrian walked in.
He looked confident.
Until he saw the lawyer.
“What is he doing here?””
I closed the folder.
“Saving you time.””
Adrian laughed.
“You think this changes anything?””
The lawyer stood.
“Mr. Vale, you should contact your attorney immediately.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
“What did you do?”” he asked me.
I looked at him.
“What did I do?””
“You’re behind this.””
I stood.
“No, Adrian. I’m finally looking at what you did.””
Vanessa entered behind him.
She looked annoyed.
“Why is everyone acting like she has power?””
I turned toward her.
“You should ask Adrian.””
She crossed her arms.
“He loves me.””
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
“Does he?””
Her face changed.
Because even she knew Adrian’s love came with conditions.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Enough.””
The old me would have apologized.
The old me would have tried to calm everyone.
That woman was gone.
“Do you know what hurts the most?”” I asked.
Adrian said nothing.
“It’s not the betrayal.””
His eyes narrowed.
“It’s that I spent three years protecting someone who never respected me.””
For a moment, there was something in his face.
Regret.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Adrian, don’t let her manipulate you.””
And just like that, he returned to the man who hurt me.
The lawyer gathered the documents.
“Mr. Vale, several investors are requesting emergency meetings today.””
Adrian looked confused.
“Why?””
I answered.
“Because your company’s biggest secret just became public.””
His phone started ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
Again.
He ignored the first calls.
Then the fifth.
Then the tenth.
Finally, he answered.
“What?””
His face changed.
The color disappeared.
“What do you mean the accounts are frozen?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
Adrian stared at me.
“You did this.””
I didn’t smile.
I didn’t celebrate.
I simply said:
“No.””
I picked up my coffee.
“My father did.””
The room went silent.
Adrian whispered:
“Your father?””
I looked at him.
“You never asked about my family.””
Another call came in.
Adrian answered.
And this time, I heard the panic in his voice.
“Daniel Ashford?””
He looked at me.
Really looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him, Adrian Vale understood exactly who I was.
But he still didn’t know the worst part.
May you like
Because my father hadn’t destroyed him yet.
He had only removed the shield protecting him.
