Chapter 6: The Smile That Terrified Me

Robert looked completely different from the man who had been pounding on the hospital door.

His shirt was perfectly pressed.

His hair was neatly combed.

His face was calm.

That was what scared me.

Because I knew him.

I knew the difference between his real emotions and the ones he performed.

And right now, he was performing.

He walked toward us slowly.

“Emma.””

My body froze.

Claire stood immediately.

“Robert.””

His eyes moved to her.

The smile disappeared for half a second.

Only half.

Then it returned.

“Claire. What a surprise.””

She said nothing.

Robert looked at me.

“I’ve been trying to talk to you.””

I crossed my arms.

“You’ve been trying to get into my daughter’s room.””

His expression changed.

Pain.

A fake version of pain.

“Because I’m her father.””

“You called her a liar.””

His jaw tightened.

“I called her confused.””

“You said she was pretending.””

“I said teenagers exaggerate.””

I stared at him.

“You’ve repeated that sentence so many times you almost believe it.””

For the first time, his mask slipped.

His eyes hardened.

Just for a second.

Then he smiled again.

“Emma, you’re emotional right now.””

There it was.

The phrase he used whenever someone challenged him.

You’re emotional.

You’re confused.

You’re overreacting.

I had spent years accepting those words.

Not anymore.

“I want a lawyer present before I speak to you again.””

The smile vanished.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

He stepped closer.

“You’re choosing strangers over your family?””

I didn’t move.

“You stopped being my family when you made my daughter afraid of you.””

The hallway went silent.

Robert stared at me.

Then he looked past me toward Maya’s room.

His voice became quiet.

“Did she tell you everything?””

The question froze me.

Not because of what he said.

Because of how he said it.

Not worried.

Not confused.

Afraid.

He was afraid of what Maya knew.

I took one step closer.

“What did you do?””

Robert’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Then explain.””

He looked away.

Just briefly.

But enough.

A security officer approached.

“Sir, you need to step back.””

Robert raised his hands.

“Of course.””

Then he looked at me.

“I hope you know what you’re doing.””

I watched him walk away.

But before he reached the elevator, he stopped.

Without turning around, he said:

“Ask your daughter what happened the night she called my sister.””

My heart stopped.

Because Maya had never told me she called Claire.

The elevator doors closed.

I immediately turned and walked back toward my daughter’s room.

“Maya.””

She looked up.

The second she saw my face, she knew.

“What did he mean?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t want to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

She looked toward the door.

Then she whispered:

“The night I ran away…”

I sat down beside her.

“You never ran away.””

She shook her head.

“Yes, Mom.””

Her voice cracked.

“I did.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“But Dad found me before Aunt Claire could get you.””

My entire body went cold.

“When?””

She swallowed.

“The night you thought I was sleeping at Jenna’s house.””

I remembered that night.

The night Robert told me Maya was safe.

The night I never questioned him.

The night I trusted him.

Maya reached under her pillow and pulled out her phone.

“There’s something else.””

She unlocked the screen.

One saved recording appeared.

Created six weeks earlier.

Her finger hovered over it.

Then she looked at me.

“Mom…”

“What?””

Her voice trembled.

“I think this is why Dad has been lying.””

She pressed play.

May you like

And the first voice I heard was not Robert’s.

It was mine.
