Chapter 17: The Choice Nobody Expected

Rachel.

The name felt impossible.

After everything.

After the videos.

After the evidence.

After she helped expose Robert.

She had helped him escape.

I refused to believe it.

“No.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“We’re verifying the details.””

“Then don’t assume she betrayed us.””

The words surprised even me.

Because I didn’t trust Rachel.

But I understood something now.

Robert’s greatest weapon was making people doubt each other.

Everyone.

Including me.

Daniel looked confused.

“Who is Rachel?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally, Detective Harris explained.

“She worked with Robert.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Then she knows.””

“Knows what?””

He looked at Maya.

“The real reason Robert wanted control.””

My stomach tightened.

“What reason?””

Daniel took a breath.

“When Robert found out Maya was mine, he didn’t just want to hide the truth.””

“Then what?””

“He wanted to erase it.””

The room went quiet.

Maya looked at him.

“Why?””

Daniel looked heartbroken.

“Because Robert believed people belonged to him.””

I thought about every conversation.

Every apology.

Every time Robert convinced me I was wrong.

The pattern had always been there.

Detective Harris received another call.

This time, she stepped away.

When she returned, her face was different.

“Rachel is here.””

My heart jumped.

“Here?””

“She asked to speak with you.””

I stood.

“No.””

Maya grabbed my hand.

“Mom.””

I looked at her.

“What if she knows something?””

That was the terrifying part.

Because she did.

Rachel entered the room a few minutes later.

She looked exhausted.

“I know what it looks like.””

I stared at her.

“You helped him.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he lied to me.””

“That’s not enough.””

Rachel looked at Maya.

“I know.””

She stepped closer.

“Robert told me he was going to hurt himself.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He said he couldn’t survive losing Maya.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course.””

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“He said you were turning everyone against him.””

“And you believed him.””

“Yes.””

She looked ashamed.

“Because I had already seen him make people doubt themselves.””

I stared.

“So why did you pay his bond?””

Rachel reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

“I didn’t.””

I froze.

“What?””

“The money came from my account.””

Detective Harris looked surprised.

“Then who authorized it?””

Rachel opened the folder.

Inside was a bank statement.

A transfer.

Not from Rachel.

From an account she didn’t recognize.

But the name attached to it made my blood run cold.

*Emma Hale.*

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Rachel nodded.

“I know.””

Detective Harris took the document.

“This account was opened under your identity.””

My hands shook.

“I never opened an account.””

Daniel looked at the paper.

Then at me.

“Robert did.””

I felt sick.

Another trap.

Another story.

Another piece of evidence he could use.

“He wants people to think I helped him.””

Detective Harris nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Maya looked terrified.

“Why?””

I looked at my daughter.

And for the first time, I understood the final move.

Robert didn’t need to win.

He needed everyone else to lose.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Robert.

I didn’t want to open it.

But I did.

*You finally understand.*

Another message appeared.

*Everyone believes what I show them.*

May you like

Then the last one.

*Including the court.*
