Chapter 14: The Woman Who Finally Spoke
Rachel refused to meet anywhere Robert could see.
Detective Harris arranged a private location, and I sat across from the woman my husband had trusted with his secrets.
I expected someone cold.
Someone cruel.
Someone who had helped destroy my family.
Instead, I saw someone exhausted.
Someone who looked like she had been carrying fear for months.
“I’m sorry,” Rachel said immediately.
I didn’t respond.
Sorry wasn’t enough.
Not anymore.
“You met my daughter without my permission.””
Her eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
“You helped Robert build a story about me.””
“Yes.””
“You let him convince you I was the problem.””
Her voice broke.
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“Then why should I believe anything you say now?””
Rachel nodded.
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised me.
She looked at me.
“I wouldn’t believe me either.””
Detective Harris sat beside me.
“Start from the beginning.””
Rachel took a breath.
“I met Robert at a professional conference.””
“What kind?””
“Family counseling.””
I almost smiled bitterly.
The irony was painful.
“He approached me afterward. He said he was worried about his daughter.””
“What did he say?””
Rachel looked down.
“He said Maya had severe emotional issues.””
My hands tightened.
“He said she was manipulative.””
The word made my stomach turn.
“Manipulative?””
“Yes.””
“What else?””
“He said she had a dangerous attachment to you.””
I shook my head.
“He made us sound sick.””
Rachel nodded.
“That’s what he does.””
I looked at her.
“What changed?””
She swallowed.
“Maya.””
“What did she say?””
“The first time I met her, Robert wasn’t there.””
“When?””
“After school.””
I felt anger again.
“How did that happen?””
“He arranged it.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Of course he did.””
Rachel nodded.
“He wanted me to evaluate her.””
“And?””
“And she didn’t act like the person he described.””
“What was she like?””
Rachel smiled sadly.
“She was quiet.””
That simple answer hurt.
“She apologized every time she asked a question.””
My throat tightened.
“She was afraid of taking up space.””
I looked away.
Because I knew that feeling.
I had watched my daughter shrink.
Rachel continued.
“Then one day she asked me something.””
“What?””
“She asked if I thought she was a bad person.””
My eyes filled.
“What did you say?””
“I asked her why she thought that.””
Rachel’s voice became soft.
“She said because her dad told her everyone would be happier if she stopped causing problems.””
The room went silent.
Detective Harris wrote something down.
“What happened after that?””
Rachel looked terrified.
“I confronted Robert.””
“And?””
“He got angry.””
“How angry?””
“He told me I didn’t understand the situation.””
Rachel’s hands shook.
“He said Maya was confused and that people like her needed structure.””
People like her.
I hated that phrase.
“What did he do next?””
“He showed me documents.””
“What documents?””
“Notes about you.””
I already knew.
The file.
The lies.
The manufactured evidence.
“He said you were unstable.””
Rachel looked at me.
“And I believed him.””
I looked down.
“Why are you helping now?””
She reached into her bag.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She placed a flash drive on the table.
“What is that?””
“Everything.””
Detective Harris picked it up.
“Explain.””
“Robert saved copies of everything.””
“Why?””
“Because he liked control.””
Rachel swallowed.
“He wanted proof that he was right.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“And what’s on it?””
Her face went pale.
“Videos.””
My heart stopped.
“Videos of what?””
Rachel looked directly at me.
“Of Robert training Maya.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
“He recorded conversations.””
“Why?””
May you like
Rachel whispered:
“Because he wanted to prove he could make her say anything.””
