Chapter 19: The Truth He Buried Forever

I stared at the message until the screen dimmed.

For a moment, I thought about ignoring it.

After everything we had survived, after finally seeing Robert exposed, I wanted to believe the nightmare was over.

But I knew better now.

People like Robert didn’t build their lives around one lie.

They built them around layers.

And somewhere beneath all those layers was the reason he had chosen Maya.

Not just to control her.

Not just to hurt me.

Something deeper.

Something he had protected for fifteen years.

I showed the message to Detective Harris.

She immediately took a screenshot.

“Did you recognize the number?””

“No.””

“Any idea who sent it?””

I shook my head.

But then Maya spoke.

“I do.””

I turned toward her.

She was staring at the phone.

Her face had lost its color.

“Maya?””

She swallowed.

“It’s him.””

My stomach dropped.

“Robert?””

She nodded.

“But he’s not supposed to contact you.””

“I know.””

Detective Harris looked at the screen.

“We’ll trace it.””

Maya wrapped her arms around herself.

“He always said the truth would ruin everything.””

I sat beside her.

“What truth?””

She looked at me.

“The one he was scared of.””

For the first time, I realized something.

Robert never feared losing custody.

He feared losing control of the story.

The next morning, Detective Harris called.

“We found the sender.””

My heart tightened.

“Who?””

There was a pause.

Then:

“Robert.””

I closed my eyes.

“How?””

“Through a device connected to his lawyer’s office.””

I frowned.

“His lawyer?””

“Yes.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means he may have had help.””

The words made my stomach twist.

“From who?””

“We’re investigating.””

That afternoon, Detective Harris asked me to come to the station.

She placed a small box on the table.

“We found this hidden in Robert’s storage unit.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

“Something he kept for years.””

Inside were old photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

The first thing I saw was a picture of Robert.

He looked younger.

Beside him was Daniel.

And a woman I didn’t recognize.

“Who is she?””

Detective Harris looked at the document.

“Her name was Laura Brooks.””

Daniel’s mother.

I picked up the next photograph.

It showed Robert, Daniel, and Laura together.

Then I saw the date.

Before Maya was born.

“What am I looking at?””

Detective Harris handed me a letter.

“It was written by Laura.””

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was shaky.

The words were worse.

*Robert, I know what you did. Daniel knows. If anything happens to me, he needs to know the truth.*

I looked up.

“What did Robert do?””

Detective Harris was quiet.

Then she answered.

“Laura discovered Robert had been using her financial information.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“He was stealing from people close to him.””

I looked back at the letter.

“But why hide this?””

“Because Daniel was going to expose him.””

Everything clicked.

Robert wasn’t afraid of losing Maya.

He was afraid Maya’s existence would bring Daniel back.

And Daniel knew the truth.

“What happened to Laura?””

Detective Harris looked down.

“She died shortly after writing this.””

The room went silent.

“How?””

“We’re reviewing the case.””

I felt sick.

Another death.

Another secret.

Another person who knew too much.

When I returned home that evening, I found something waiting outside my door.

An envelope.

No name.

No address.

Just my name.

Emma.

Inside was a handwritten note.

The handwriting was familiar.

Robert’s.

*You think you know why I did everything.*

I kept reading.

*You think Maya was the reason.*

My hands shook.

*She wasn’t.*

I turned the page.

Only one sentence remained.

*Maya was proof of what I did.*

My heart stopped.

May you like

Below it was a final line.

*Ask Daniel what happened the night Maya was born.*
