Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Door

Those four words followed me everywhere.

Dad wasn’t alone.

I heard them while speaking with the social worker.

I heard them while signing paperwork.

I heard them while sitting beside Maya as doctors examined her again.

Because I finally understood something.

The truth wasn’t one terrible moment.

It was a pattern.

A carefully built wall of lies.

And my husband had spent years making sure nobody looked closely enough to see what was behind it.

“Maya,” I said quietly after the doctors left, “who else was involved?””

She stared at the blanket.

“I don’t know.””

“You said he wasn’t alone.””

She nodded slowly.

“Not like that.””

“What does that mean?””

She rubbed her thumb against her palm.

A habit she had when she was scared.

“He always talked to someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know his name.””

My stomach twisted.

“What did he say?””

Maya looked at me.

“He said someone was helping him.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“Helping him do what?””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I wanted to push.

I wanted answers.

But I also saw my daughter sitting there, exhausted and terrified.

So I held her hand.

“We’ll figure this out.””

For the first time in weeks, she believed me.

Not completely.

Not yet.

But enough.

A few minutes later, Linda returned.

“There’s someone here who wants to speak with you.””

I immediately tensed.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Claire Hale.””

My heart raced.

I stood.

Claire was sitting in the waiting area when I walked out.

She looked nothing like the confident woman I knew.

Her makeup was gone.

Her hair was messy.

Her hands were shaking.

The second she saw me, she stood.

“Emma.””

I didn’t hug her.

Not yet.

“Tell me everything.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I deserve that.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

We sat in a quiet corner away from the hallway.

Claire looked toward the hospital entrance.

“Robert doesn’t know I’m here.””

“How sure are you?””

She gave a bitter laugh.

“I’m not sure about anything anymore.””

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this because I was afraid.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Proof of what?””

Claire looked at me.

“Proof that Robert has been lying about Maya’s illness.””

She placed the envelope on the table.

Inside was a printed email.

The sender’s name made my stomach drop.

Robert Hale.

The recipient was someone named Dr. Grant.

I scanned the first few lines.

My hands started trembling.

It wasn’t a medical report.

It wasn’t a school message.

It was a conversation.

About Maya.

About controlling her.

About making people think she was unstable.

I looked up.

“Where did you get this?””

“His computer.””

“You went through his computer?””

Claire looked away.

“I was trying to find out what he was hiding.””

“And?””

“I found more than I wanted.””

My voice lowered.

“What else?””

She swallowed.

“Emma…”

“What else?””

She pulled another paper from her bag.

This one was older.

Much older.

My eyes moved across the page.

A police report.

A name.

A date.

And a description of an incident involving Robert when he was nineteen.

I looked at Claire.

“Why have I never seen this?””

“Because it disappeared.””

“What?””

“Robert made sure nobody saw it.””

The hallway lights flickered above us.

I felt like I was watching my entire marriage collapse piece by piece.

“Claire, who is Dr. Grant?””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“He’s not a doctor.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“He’s someone Robert has known for years.””

“Then why does he use that name?””

Claire leaned closer.

“Because Robert didn’t want anyone to know what they were really doing.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Robert.

Again.

I stared at the screen.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Don’t answer.””

“Why?””

Her voice dropped.

“Because he knows.””

My blood turned cold.

“Knows what?””

Claire looked toward the hospital entrance.

Then she whispered:

“He knows Maya talked.””

May you like

At that exact moment, the elevator doors opened.

And Robert stepped out.
