Chapter 16: The Man Behind the Final Lie
For one second, I couldn’t move.
The nurse stood in the doorway, waiting for my response.
“Her real father?””
The words sounded impossible.
Maya looked at me.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“Mom?””
I stepped in front of her without thinking.
“Who is he?””
The nurse shook her head.
“He wouldn’t give his name at first.””
My heart pounded.
“Where is he?””
“Security stopped him at the entrance.””
Detective Harris was already calling someone.
I looked at Maya.
“Stay here.””
Her hand grabbed mine.
“No.””
“Maya.””
“Don’t leave me.””
That sentence stopped me.
Because six weeks earlier, she had been the one begging someone to listen.
Now she was asking me not to disappear.
I sat beside her.
“I’m not going anywhere.””
A few minutes later, Detective Harris returned.
Her expression was serious.
“It’s not what we expected.””
I stood.
“Then who is he?””
She looked at Maya.
“He says his name is Daniel Brooks.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Maya reacted.
A tiny movement.
A slight widening of her eyes.
“You know him.””
It wasn’t a question.
Maya looked down.
“I’ve seen him.””
My heart dropped.
“When?””
She swallowed.
“Before.””
“How before?””
She hugged herself.
“Dad showed me pictures.””
I felt anger rise.
“Pictures of who?””
“Of him.””
Detective Harris exchanged a glance with me.
“Robert told Maya that Daniel was someone from his past.””
“What kind of someone?””
Maya shook her head.
“He didn’t explain.””
I looked at Detective Harris.
“Can we speak with him?””
She nodded.
“He’s waiting.””
The man sitting in the interview room looked nothing like Robert.
That was the first thing I noticed.
He looked nervous.
Guilty.
Like someone who had spent years carrying something too heavy.
When he saw Maya, his eyes filled.
“Maya.””
She froze.
He stood slowly.
“I’m sorry.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked between them.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at me.
“I’m Daniel Brooks.””
“And?””
His eyes dropped.
“I’m Maya’s biological father.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the ground had disappeared.
“No.””
The word escaped.
Daniel nodded sadly.
“I know this is impossible to hear.””
“Impossible?””
I laughed once.
Painfully.
“You’re telling me my husband isn’t her father?””
Daniel looked at Maya.
“No.””
Maya looked confused.
“Then why did he raise me?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Regret.
Deep regret.
“Because Robert made sure I couldn’t.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel sat down.
“Before Maya was born, Robert and I knew each other.””
“How?””
“Business.””
I crossed my arms.
“And?””
“We were friends.””
That word sounded strange.
Robert had a talent for turning everyone into a weapon.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at Maya.
“He found out I was her father.””
Maya’s face went pale.
“When?””
“Before you were born.””
I looked at him.
“Then why did you disappear?””
His eyes filled.
“Because Robert threatened me.””
“With what?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Everything.””
The room became quiet.
“He told me if I tried to contact you or your mother, he would make sure I lost my job, my reputation, and my freedom.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“Why believe him?””
“Because he showed me proof.””
“What proof?””
Daniel looked at Detective Harris.
“Fake evidence.””
A chill moved through me.
“Of course.””
Robert didn’t just destroy people emotionally.
He destroyed their credibility.
Daniel continued.
“He convinced me everyone would believe him.””
Maya whispered:
“So Dad knew?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled.
“He knew I wasn’t his.””
“Yes.””
“And he still raised me?””
Daniel looked away.
“That’s the part I never understood.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel said:
“He didn’t raise you because he loved you.””
The words hurt.
Even though they came from a stranger.
“He raised you because you were something he could control.””
Maya started crying.
I moved toward her.
But before I reached her, Detective Harris’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed immediately.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Are you sure?””
She looked at me.
And my heart sank.
“What happened?””
She ended the call.
“Robert wasn’t released by mistake.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He was released because someone paid his bond.””
“Who?””
Detective Harris looked at Daniel.
May you like
The room went silent.
“Rachel Morgan.””
