Chapter 8: The Man Who Knew My Son's Secret

Thomas immediately disconnected the computer from the network.

Rachel, who had arrived shortly before the email, photographed the message and documented the time it had been received.

"Who sent it?"" I asked.

"We're going to investigate," she replied.

"But we shouldn't assume it's Daniel yet.""

I looked at the screen.

"Who else would care about what Robert recorded?""

Thomas leaned back.

"Victor Hale.""

The name seemed to hang in the room.

I remembered Margaret's warning.

Victor had called her only days earlier.

He wanted to know whether I was still managing Robert's estate.

Now someone was threatening us because we'd found the video.

Rachel closed her notebook.

"I recommend that we don't contact anyone connected to the old business until we've secured copies of all the relevant documents.""

I nodded.

But there was something I needed to know.

"What exactly did Robert mean when he said they were going to make me responsible for the missing money?""

Thomas opened the envelope from the safety deposit box.

Inside was a copy of a financial agreement dated September 2019.

My name appeared near the bottom.

The document stated that I had personally authorized a transfer of $2.8 million to an investment company controlled by Victor Hale.

I stared at the signature.

It looked convincing.

But it wasn't mine.

"I never signed this.""

Rachel examined it.

"We'll need a forensic document examiner, but I can already see inconsistencies.""

Thomas turned another page.

It contained an authorization for the transfer of several commercial properties as collateral.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Could they have used this document to take my properties?""

"They could have attempted to," Rachel said.

"But Robert appears to have taken steps to prevent that.""

She pointed to a handwritten note in the margin.

Do not release title documents. Authorization disputed.

Robert had written it himself.

I pressed my fingers against the page.

He had caught them.

He had protected us.

But why had he never told me?

I looked at the second video file.

"Can we watch the rest?""

Thomas nodded.

He opened the file.

Robert appeared again, this time sitting in his car.

He looked tired.

His hair was uncombed, and there were papers scattered across the passenger seat.

"January 22, 2020," he said.

"Today I confronted Daniel. I asked him why he had allowed Victor to use his company to move the money.""

Robert rubbed his forehead.

"Daniel told me he didn't know the full details. I don't believe him.""

He looked away from the camera.

Then he continued.

"Vanessa was there, too. She became angry when I mentioned the missing funds. She said I was destroying Daniel's future by refusing to help him.""

Robert laughed bitterly.

"I told her that helping my son didn't mean covering up a crime.""

My eyes filled.

The video continued.

"Then Vanessa made a threat. She told me that if I didn't cooperate, she would make sure Eleanor never found out what really happened.""

Robert leaned closer.

"I don't know what she meant by that. But I know this much: they have been discussing Eleanor's inheritance.""

The video ended.

I couldn't speak.

Rachel looked at Thomas.

"That sounds like potential evidence of a coordinated effort to manipulate the estate.""

I wiped my cheeks.

"Play the third video.""

Thomas opened it.

This time, Robert was standing in our kitchen.

I recognized the curtains behind him.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Ellie, if you've found this, I need you to listen carefully.""

His voice softened.

"I love Daniel. I will always love him. But I can't allow him to destroy what we've built.""

He took a deep breath.

"Victor has been using Daniel's financial problems to pressure him. But Vanessa knows more than she's admitting.""

I leaned forward.

Robert continued.

"I discovered that she has been contacting someone about getting Eleanor declared incapable of managing her affairs. She's been asking questions about guardianship and financial authority.""

I felt a chill.

This was six years ago.

Six years before the Christmas gift.

Six years before I knew anything was wrong.

Robert had known they were considering this.

He looked down at his hands.

"I hope I'm wrong. God, I hope I'm wrong.""

Then he looked back at the camera.

"But if I'm right, Ellie, don't trust anyone who tells you they're doing this for your own good.""

The video ended.

I was crying openly now.

Thomas placed a glass of water in front of me.

Rachel quietly closed the laptop.

"There's one more video," I whispered.

Thomas nodded.

He opened the final file.

The recording began with Robert sitting at his desk.

A calendar was visible behind him.

The date was March 3, 2022.

Three months before his death.

My breath caught.

He looked older than in the earlier videos.

His face was thinner, and his voice was weaker.

"Ellie," he began, "I found something else.""

He held up a document.

"Victor has been trying to sell information about our properties to a private investment group. I believe Daniel is involved.""

He paused.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"But the most disturbing discovery is that the group isn't interested in buying our buildings.""

Robert leaned closer.

"They want to acquire the company through a forced transfer of ownership.""

I looked at Thomas.

He was motionless.

Robert continued.

"They believe that if Eleanor is declared incapable of managing her affairs, they can use Daniel's authority to force a restructuring of the assets.""

I covered my mouth.

The plan wasn't simply about inheritance.

It was about gaining control of the company itself.

Robert looked directly into the camera.

"I've already contacted the appropriate people. The trust is protected. But there is one document I haven't been able to locate.""

He lowered his voice.

"The original agreement between Daniel, Vanessa, and Victor.""

Then he stopped recording.

Thomas stared at the screen.

"That's it?""

"Yes," he replied.

I wiped my cheeks.

"Where is the original agreement?""

Thomas examined the envelope again.

There was another sheet of paper tucked inside.

It contained an address and a name.

*VICTOR HALE — PRIVATE OFFICE, COLUMBUS.*

Beneath it, Robert had written:

He will know where the original is.

Rachel shook her head.

"We shouldn't go there without understanding the risks.""

But before she could say more, Thomas's phone rang.

He looked at the caller ID.

"That's strange.""

"Who is it?"" I asked.

"Margaret.""

He answered.

"Margaret, what's happening?""

Her voice was frantic.

"Thomas, I just received a call from Victor Hale.""

Thomas stood up.

"What did he want?""

"He wants to meet Eleanor.""

I looked at him.

Thomas switched to speaker.

Margaret continued.

"He says he has the original agreement Robert was looking for.""

My heart began racing.

"Why would he want to give it to me?"" I asked.

Margaret hesitated.

"Because he says Daniel has betrayed him.""

I stared at Thomas.

"What does that mean?""

Margaret's voice dropped.

"Victor claims Daniel has been using him as a scapegoat. He says Vanessa has been the person coordinating the guardianship scheme, and Daniel has been preparing to take control of the company.""

Rachel immediately asked, "Did Victor explain why he's coming forward now?""

"Yes.""

Margaret paused.

"He says he wants protection from the investigation. He's willing to testify if Eleanor agrees to meet him.""

I looked at the photograph of Robert and Daniel.

My son had apparently spent years hiding things from me.

Now the man who helped him was offering to expose him.

"Where does he want to meet?"" I asked.

Margaret gave us an address.

Then she added one final warning.

"Ellie, Victor said something else.""

"What?""

"He claims the original agreement contains a clause that gives someone outside the family the right to take over Whitmore Properties if you are declared legally incompetent.""

My heart stopped.

"Who?""

May you like

Margaret's answer was barely audible.

"Vanessa.""
