Chapter 9: The Woman Who Planned to Take Everything

I didn't go to Victor Hale's office alone.

Rachel insisted on accompanying me, and Thomas arranged for another attorney to know exactly where we would be.

The meeting was scheduled for ten in the morning at a private conference room in a downtown office building.

When we entered, Victor was already waiting.

He was older than the photograph I'd found in Robert's study. His hair had turned almost completely gray, and he wore an expensive charcoal suit.

He stood when he saw me.

"Eleanor Whitmore.""

I didn't offer my hand.

"You knew my husband.""

"Very well.""

"Then you know why I'm here.""

Victor nodded.

"Because of Robert's recordings.""

"Because of what you did to my family.""

He looked down.

"That's fair.""

Rachel placed her briefcase on the table.

"Let's begin. You said you had an original agreement.""

Victor opened a leather folder.

He removed a document and placed it in front of us.

It was dated August 2019.

Three names appeared on the first page.

Daniel Whitmore.

Vanessa Whitmore.

Victor Hale.

I stared at the signatures.

Daniel's was unmistakable.

Vanessa's was written in elegant, looping letters.

The agreement described a financial arrangement involving Whitmore Properties.

It stated that if I became unable to manage my affairs, Daniel would seek legal authority over the company.

Once that authority was established, certain assets would be transferred into a newly formed holding company.

The controlling shareholder of that company would be Vanessa.

I read the paragraph again.

Then again.

"Why would my daughter-in-law own my company?""

Victor folded his hands.

"Because she was the one who proposed the structure.""

I looked at him.

"Explain.""

He took a breath.

"Daniel was having financial problems. He owed money to several creditors. Vanessa believed the only way to secure their future was to gain control of your properties.""

"And you agreed to help?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"Because I expected to receive a percentage of the assets after the restructuring.""

I stared at him.

"So all three of you were planning to steal from me.""

Victor didn't defend himself.

"Yes.""

The honesty was almost more offensive than another lie.

Rachel began examining the document.

"How much were you expecting to receive?""

"Five percent of the transferred holdings.""

"And how much would Vanessa control?""

"Approximately sixty percent of the new company.""

I felt dizzy.

Sixty percent.

She hadn't wanted a comfortable inheritance.

She wanted control of the entire business.

"Why didn't Daniel simply inherit the company?""

Victor gave a bitter laugh.

"Because Robert had already made arrangements to prevent that.""

He explained that the separate trust made it impossible for Daniel to gain automatic control over several major properties.

The guardianship strategy was designed to create legal pressure and open the door to restructuring the remaining assets.

But Robert had discovered the plan.

And then he'd died.

I looked at Victor.

"Did you have anything to do with my husband's death?""

His expression changed.

"No.""

"Are you certain?""

"I swear. Robert's death was not part of our agreement.""

I held his gaze.

He continued.

"After Robert died, Vanessa wanted to move quickly. But Daniel became hesitant.""

"Why?""

"Because he knew his father had left safeguards.""

I remembered Daniel's phone call.

Dad wasn't the man you think he was.

I leaned forward.

"What did Daniel know?""

Victor looked toward Rachel.

She nodded.

"You can answer.""

Victor opened another folder.

Inside were bank statements, emails, and a series of text messages.

One message from Vanessa to Daniel read:

We need to finish this before Eleanor starts giving away money. If she gives Madison anything substantial, it will complicate the final asset calculation.

I stared at the page.

The Christmas gift.

The $100,000 check.

It hadn't been a spontaneous act of cruelty.

They had been monitoring my intended gifts.

Another message read:

The granddaughter can help us establish a pattern of irrational generosity. Make sure she understands what she needs to say.

I felt tears sting my eyes.

"She was eighteen.""

Victor nodded.

"Vanessa told me she was easy to influence.""

I clenched my hands.

"Did Daniel know about the plan to use Madison?""

"Yes.""

The answer broke something inside me.

I'd wanted to believe Daniel had been dragged into this by his wife.

But the evidence suggested otherwise.

"Did they discuss the fake recording?""

Victor looked surprised.

"Which recording?""

"The one Vanessa edited to make me look confused.""

He shook his head.

"I don't know about that.""

Rachel examined the messages.

"Is there anything showing the planned guardianship filing?""

Victor opened another envelope.

"Yes.""

He handed Rachel a printed email.

It was from Vanessa to Daniel.

The subject line read:

*DECEMBER DEADLINE.*

We cannot allow the December 31 trust review to happen. If Eleanor remains in control, the assets will be locked into the new structure. We need the guardianship petition filed first.

Rachel read the message twice.

Then she looked at Thomas.

"This is significant.""

Victor continued.

"There is something else you should know.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Daniel has already signed a preliminary agreement with a private investment group.""

My heart tightened.

"Which group?""

"Northbridge Capital.""

I had heard the name.

They were a large investment firm that specialized in acquiring distressed commercial property portfolios.

"How much were they offering?""

Victor glanced at his papers.

"Twenty-six million dollars for the entire property portfolio.""

I stared at him.

"Our properties are worth considerably less than that.""

"Exactly. They were expecting to acquire them below market value through the restructuring.""

"And who would receive the money?""

"Vanessa's holding company would receive the largest portion. Daniel would receive a separate payment. I would receive my commission.""

Rachel placed the agreement into her briefcase.

"This needs to be handed over to the appropriate authorities.""

Victor nodded.

"I understand.""

I looked directly at him.

"Why should I believe anything you say?""

He reached into his jacket and removed a small photograph.

It showed Robert standing outside a courthouse with a woman I didn't recognize.

"Because Robert came to me shortly before he died.""

I took the photograph.

"Who is this woman?""

"His attorney.""

"Why was he with her?""

Victor leaned forward.

"He was preparing to file a formal complaint against Daniel and Vanessa. He wanted to expose the entire arrangement.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Then why didn't he?""

Victor looked down.

"Because Daniel begged him not to.""

I remembered Robert's final video.

Three months before his death.

He had said he'd contacted the appropriate people.

Had he been preparing to report his own son?

"What happened at that meeting?""

Victor hesitated.

"Robert told Daniel he would give him one final opportunity to withdraw from the agreement.""

"And Daniel?""

"He refused.""

My eyes filled.

"Did Robert tell him about the trust?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did Daniel keep going?""

Victor gave me a painful look.

"Because Vanessa told him something.""

"What?""

"She said that once you were declared incompetent, you would never be able to challenge them. She convinced him that he could control your estate, sell the company, and start over somewhere else.""

I stared at the table.

Somewhere else.

With my husband's money.

With my life's work.

With the future Robert and I had built.

I stood.

"Thank you for the documents.""

Victor nodded.

"Eleanor, there's one more thing.""

I turned.

He slid a final page across the table.

It was a signed purchase agreement.

The buyer was Northbridge Capital.

The proposed closing date was January 15.

The seller was a company I didn't recognize.

But the listed authorized representative was unmistakable.

*DANIEL WHITMORE, ACTING UNDER POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR ELEANOR WHITMORE.*

My signature appeared at the bottom.

Forged.

Rachel photographed the document.

Then her phone rang.

She answered, listened for a few seconds, and her expression changed.

"What do you mean the petition has already been filed?""

I felt my stomach drop.

Rachel looked at me.

"Eleanor, there's a problem.""

"What?""

"The guardianship petition was submitted this morning.""

I stared at her.

"That's impossible. The date was tomorrow.""

She shook her head.

"Vanessa filed it early.""

Thomas stood up.

"Has a hearing been scheduled?""

Rachel checked her phone.

"Yes.""

"When?""

She looked at me.

"Tomorrow morning.""

I felt the room spin.

Tomorrow.

My entire life was about to be examined by strangers because my son and daughter-in-law had decided I was worth more as a helpless old woman than as a living person.

Then Rachel read the final line of the court notice.

"The petition also requests an emergency temporary guardian.""

"Who?""

She swallowed.

"Daniel Whitmore.""

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

It was Madison.

I answered immediately.

"Grandma!""

She was crying.

"Grandma, you have to help me!""

"What's wrong?""

"Mom found out I sent you the messages. She took my phone, and Dad says I'm not allowed to leave the house.""

"Madison, are you safe?""

"I don't know. Mom is packing my things.""

My heart pounded.

"Why?""

Madison whispered:

"She says I'm going to a boarding school in another state after the hearing.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why would she do that?""

Then Madison said something I would never forget.

"Because I told them I won't lie in court anymore.""

There was a crash in the background.

Vanessa shouted.

"Give me that phone!""

The call disconnected.

I looked at Rachel.

"Can they force Madison to leave?""

"Not simply because she disagrees with them. But we need to understand the circumstances.""

I stood up.

"Then we're going to get her.""

Rachel nodded.

But before we could leave, Thomas received an email.

He opened it.

His face turned pale.

"Eleanor...""

"What now?""

He turned the laptop toward me.

It was a message from the court-appointed evaluator.

The hearing tomorrow wasn't going to be an ordinary guardianship hearing.

The evaluator had already reviewed Vanessa's edited recordings and the statements submitted by Daniel and Madison.

And the preliminary report contained a recommendation.

I read the final sentence.

Based on the submitted materials, immediate temporary guardianship is recommended pending a comprehensive capacity assessment.

I looked at the clock.

It was almost four in the afternoon.

We had less than twenty hours.

And for the first time, I understood that even if I could prove every lie my family had told, I might have to fight to keep control of my own life.

Rachel closed her briefcase.

"Then tomorrow, we're going to show the court who Eleanor Whitmore really is.""

But I wasn't thinking about the court anymore.

I was thinking about Madison.

And about the final video Robert had left behind.

Because Thomas had noticed something in the file list that none of us had examined carefully.

There was one additional recording.

It wasn't dated 2020 or 2022.

It had been created just eleven days before Robert died.

Its filename was:

*THE_TRUTH_ABOUT_DANIEL_AND_VANESSA_FINAL.mp4*

And beneath it was a note Robert had written:

Only play this if they come after Eleanor.

May you like

Tomorrow, they were coming after me.

And now I knew exactly which video we needed to watch.
