Chapter 7: The Video My Husband Left Behind
I stared at the photograph Madison had sent me.
Robert was sitting behind his old mahogany desk, wearing the blue sweater I'd bought him for his sixty-eighth birthday. His hands were folded on the desktop, and his expression was unusually serious.
I recognized the room immediately.
It was his study.
The same room where I'd found his black notebook.
The same room where he'd spent countless evenings reviewing property documents while I sat beside him reading.
But the date beneath the photograph made no sense.
January 14, 2020.
Two years before his death.
I called Madison.
She answered in a whisper.
"Grandma, you can't tell Mom I sent this.""
"I won't, sweetheart. Where did you find it?""
"On Dad's old laptop. Mom keeps it in her bedroom closet. I was looking for my college documents, and I found a folder with Grandpa's name.""
"Have you watched the video?""
"Part of it.""
"What did you see?""
She hesitated.
"Grandpa was talking about Dad. He said something about money and a business partner. Then he said he was afraid someone would try to hurt you.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Did he say who?""
"No. The video stopped.""
"Why?""
"I don't know. There were several files. I think Mom deleted part of it.""
I glanced at Thomas and Rachel.
They were listening carefully.
"Madison, can you send me the original file?""
"I can try, but Mom is upstairs. She's been looking for something on her laptop all morning.""
"Don't put yourself in danger. If you can safely preserve the file, do that. Don't confront your mother.""
Madison went quiet.
Then she asked, "Grandma, do you hate me?""
My heart broke.
"No, sweetheart.""
"But I burned your present.""
"I know.""
"I knew it was important. Mom told me what was inside.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why did you do it?""
"She said it would help prove you were making reckless financial decisions. She told me if I didn't cooperate, she'd stop paying my tuition. She said Dad would send me away.""
I took a shaky breath.
"Madison, you made a terrible choice. But telling the truth now matters.""
"I know.""
"Can you come see me?""
"Not yet. Mom is watching everything I do.""
Before hanging up, Madison whispered something that made me sit upright.
"Grandma, Dad knows about the video. He told Mom they should destroy it before you find out what Grandpa recorded.""
The call ended.
Thomas stood up.
"We need that video.""
Rachel nodded.
"And we need to preserve the original metadata. If someone has altered it, the original recording could be important evidence.""
I looked at them.
"What do you think Robert was trying to tell me?""
Thomas hesitated.
"Based on everything we've uncovered, I suspect your husband discovered that Daniel and Vanessa were involved in something far more serious than financial mismanagement.""
I looked at Robert's photograph again.
"Then let's find out.""
Two hours later, Thomas received a call from Margaret Collins.
She had been investigating Robert's old business records since our conversation the previous day.
"Eleanor," Margaret said, "I found something you need to know.""
"What is it?""
"Do you remember the commercial development project Robert and Daniel discussed in 2019?""
"Daniel's logistics company?""
"Yes. The one that supposedly failed.""
I nodded, although she couldn't see me.
"Robert discovered that the company was used to move money between several accounts. The transactions involved a business partner named Victor Hale.""
I remembered the man in the photograph.
"Was he the man standing with Daniel at the charity gala?""
"Yes.""
"What did he do?""
"Victor was an investment consultant. He arranged private property deals and handled several high-value transfers.""
Margaret explained that Robert had become suspicious after discovering that money from one of the company's property transactions had been diverted into an account that wasn't listed in the official records.
The amount was $1.4 million.
"Was the money stolen?"" I asked.
"We couldn't establish that at the time. But Robert believed it had been improperly transferred.""
"And Daniel was involved?""
"His signature appeared on the authorization.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Why didn't Robert report him?""
"He intended to confront Victor first. He believed Daniel might have been manipulated.""
"Did he ever confront him?""
"Yes. And apparently, the meeting went very badly.""
Margaret paused.
"Ellie, there's something else. Three days after that meeting, Robert changed the ownership structure of several properties and created the protection trust.""
I stared at Thomas.
The trust.
The missing money.
The secret video.
Suddenly, the pieces were beginning to fit together.
"Margaret, did Robert ever tell you why he was afraid?""
Her voice softened.
"He told me he had discovered that Victor was preparing to use your name in a financial transaction without your permission.""
I stood up.
"My name?""
"Yes. Robert believed someone was attempting to create documents that would make you appear responsible for a transfer you knew nothing about.""
I felt dizzy.
"How much?""
"Approximately $2.8 million.""
Rachel immediately began writing.
"Do you have copies of those records?"" she asked.
"Yes. I'll send everything to Thomas.""
Margaret paused again.
"Ellie, I wish I had something better to tell you. Robert believed he had stopped the arrangement. But he never fully trusted Daniel afterward.""
I looked toward the photograph of Robert.
"What happened to Victor?""
"He disappeared from the business world. At least publicly.""
"Is he still alive?""
"Yes.""
"Where is he?""
Margaret gave me an address.
Then she said something that changed everything.
"Ellie, Victor called me last week.""
My breath caught.
"Why?""
"He wanted to know whether Robert's widow was still managing the estate.""
I looked at Thomas.
"Did you tell him anything?""
"No. But he said something strange.""
"What?""
"He said, 'Tell Eleanor that Robert didn't die knowing the whole truth.''"
The room went silent.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"What does that mean?""
Margaret didn't answer immediately.
Then she said, "I think it means your husband discovered something shortly before he died.""
That evening, I returned to Robert's study.
I opened the black notebook again and carefully examined the final pages.
Between two sheets of paper, I found a small envelope.
Inside was a key.
A brass key with a tiny number engraved on its head.
*417.*
I turned it over.
On the back, Robert had written:
For the recording.
I called Thomas.
He arrived twenty minutes later.
"Do you recognize this?""
He examined the key.
"Not immediately.""
I remembered Robert keeping a safety deposit box at a bank downtown.
We had closed most of our joint boxes after he died, but I had never checked whether he had opened a separate one.
Thomas called the bank.
After several minutes, he looked at me.
"Eleanor, there's a safety deposit box registered in Robert's name. Number 417.""
I gripped the key.
"Can we access it?""
"With the appropriate estate documentation, yes. I'll arrange it for tomorrow morning.""
I barely slept that night.
At eight thirty the following morning, Thomas and I entered the bank's private vault.
The manager escorted us to a small room and opened the safety deposit box.
Inside were three things.
A black USB drive.
A thick envelope.
And a photograph of Robert standing beside Daniel and Victor Hale.
On the back, Robert had written:
The day I discovered what my son had done.
Thomas picked up the USB drive.
"Eleanor, I think this is what we've been looking for.""
We returned to his office.
He connected the drive to a secure computer.
There were four video files.
The first was dated January 14, 2020.
Robert appeared on the screen.
He looked directly into the camera.
His voice was steady.
"If you're watching this, Ellie, then something has happened that prevented me from explaining the truth to you.""
I covered my mouth.
He continued.
"I discovered that Daniel and Victor used our company records to authorize a transfer of money that never belonged to them. But the worst part wasn't the money.""
Robert leaned closer to the camera.
"It was the document they prepared afterward.""
He paused.
Then he said the words that made my entire body go cold.
"They used your name, Ellie. And they intended to make you responsible for the missing funds.""
The video ended.
Thomas immediately opened the second file.
But before it could play, a notification appeared on his computer.
An email had arrived.
The sender was an unfamiliar address.
The subject line read:
*WE KNOW YOU FOUND ROBERT'S VIDEO.*
May you like
And the message contained just seven words.
Stop investigating, or Daniel will lose everything.
