Chapter 4: My Husband's Secret Trust

I arrived at Thomas Reed's office the following morning carrying a notebook, a bottle of water, and a fear I couldn't quite put into words.

I hadn't slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Daniel standing beside the fireplace, telling me I wouldn't always be alive.

My own son.

The little boy who used to climb into our bed during thunderstorms had become a man who apparently wanted to take everything his father and I had built.

Thomas was waiting when I entered.

He had a large brown envelope on his desk.

"Good morning, Eleanor.""

"Please don't tell me you're about to show me another document proving my family hates me.""

He gave me a sympathetic look.

"I wish I could.""

I sat down.

He opened the envelope and removed a thick legal document bearing Robert's signature.

I recognized his handwriting immediately.

My husband had a distinctive way of writing the letter R, with a long downward stroke.

I touched the signature.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the attorney who handled Robert's estate. He contacted me yesterday after I explained what was happening.""

"Why wasn't this included in the original inheritance paperwork?""

"Because it wasn't part of the ordinary estate distribution.""

Thomas turned the document toward me.

At the top, it read:

*THE ROBERT WHITMORE LEGACY PROTECTION TRUST.*

I frowned.

"Robert never mentioned this.""

"He created it eighteen months before his death.""

I stared at him.

"Why would he keep something like this from me?""

"Perhaps he intended to explain it later. But there's a letter attached.""

Thomas removed another envelope.

My name was written across the front.

For Eleanor, when the time is right.

My throat tightened.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My darling Ellie,

If you're reading this, something has happened that prevented me from explaining the decisions I've made.

I have always trusted your judgment. I have also always loved Daniel. But loving our son does not mean ignoring what he has become.

I stopped.

The room seemed to grow smaller.

I continued.

Over the last few years, I've noticed Daniel becoming increasingly interested in our wealth rather than the work that created it. He has asked questions about inheritance, ownership, and control that concern me.

I hope I'm wrong about him.

But if I'm not, I want you protected.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

Robert had known.

He had seen something I hadn't.

Thomas waited patiently.

When I finally looked up, he said, "The trust contains approximately $6.2 million in commercial property interests and investment assets.""

I blinked.

"Six million?""

"Yes. Robert transferred those assets into the trust before his death.""

"Who controls it?""

"You do, as the primary beneficiary. But there's a successor provision.""

"Who?""

Thomas turned to the final page.

"An independent trustee appointed by Robert's attorney. Daniel has no authority over it.""

I read the clause twice.

Then I noticed another paragraph.

It stated that if I became legally incapacitated, the independent trustee would retain control of the protected assets until a court-approved successor arrangement was established.

Daniel couldn't simply take over.

I looked at Thomas.

"Is that why he's trying to have me declared incompetent?""

"Possibly. The trust prevents him from automatically gaining control, but it doesn't prevent him from trying to influence the broader estate or challenge the arrangement.""

I swallowed.

"What happens on December thirty-first?""

Thomas pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

"There's a scheduled review of the trust's investment structure. Robert arranged for certain ownership interests to be consolidated at the end of this year.""

"And?""

"If the review is completed, the assets become substantially more difficult for anyone outside the trust to interfere with.""

I leaned back.

"So they want to get control before the review.""

"That's our working theory.""

I looked at the letter again.

There was something written at the bottom that I'd missed.

Ellie, if Daniel ever tells you that I'm the reason he deserves more, remember this: I gave him opportunities. I did not promise him everything.

My eyes filled with tears.

"Robert knew how much I loved that boy.""

Thomas nodded.

"He also knew how much that love could make you vulnerable.""

I sat quietly for several minutes.

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me.

"Did Daniel know about the trust?""

Thomas opened another folder.

"We found an email sent from his personal account to Robert's former attorney two months ago.""

He handed me the printout.

The message was short.

I understand my father established a separate trust before his death. I would like to know whether my mother's current condition allows me to challenge the arrangement.

My hands began shaking.

"His mother's current condition?""

Thomas nodded.

"He was already preparing to challenge the trust.""

I put the paper down.

"How long has this been happening?""

"We don't know yet.""

I stared through the glass wall of Thomas's office at the busy street below.

People were walking to work, carrying coffee, talking on their phones.

Ordinary lives.

I wondered how many of them were sitting at home believing their families loved them, unaware that someone was quietly calculating the value of their possessions.

"Thomas, I need to ask you something.""

"Of course.""

"Can Daniel actually succeed in having me declared incompetent?""

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

"Not simply because he says you're forgetful. A court would require credible medical evidence and a proper legal process. But fabricated incidents, misleading statements, and improperly obtained medical records can create serious complications.""

I nodded.

"Then we need to stop him.""

"Yes.""

I looked at the letter again.

For the first time since Robert died, I felt that he was still protecting me.

But there was another question.

"Who is the independent trustee?""

Thomas glanced at the document.

"Her name is Margaret Collins.""

I frowned.

"Margaret? Robert's old business partner?""

"Yes.""

"Where is she now?""

"She lives in Connecticut. I've already contacted her.""

"What did she say?""

Thomas hesitated.

"She asked me to tell you that Robert left one additional instruction.""

"What instruction?""

Thomas opened the envelope again and removed a small folded note.

It contained just one sentence.

If Daniel comes asking for control, ask him what happened to the money I gave him in 2019.

I stared at the words.

"What money?""

Thomas looked directly at me.

"That's what Margaret wants to discuss.""

My heart began beating faster.

"How much did Robert give him?""

Thomas turned another page.

"According to the records, $850,000.""

I nearly dropped the paper.

"Eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars?""

"Yes.""

"And Daniel told me he had lost everything in his business.""

"Apparently, the money wasn't used for the purpose Robert intended.""

"What was it used for?""

Thomas closed the folder.

"Margaret believes she has the answer.""

May you like

Then he added something that made my blood run cold.

"She also believes Daniel wasn't the only person involved.""
