Chapter 6: The Recording That Could Destroy Me

Thomas arrived at my house forty minutes later.

He brought a laptop, a legal pad, and a woman named Rachel Bennett, an attorney specializing in elder financial abuse and guardianship disputes.

Rachel was in her early fifties, dressed in a navy suit, with a calm expression that made me feel slightly less frightened.

After introductions, Thomas explained Madison's phone call.

Rachel listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she placed her briefcase on the table.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I need you to understand something. If someone has edited a recording to make you appear confused or incapable, that could be extremely serious.""

"Can they really do that?""

"Anyone can submit misleading material. But that doesn't mean a court will accept it. We need to establish where the recording came from, whether it was altered, and what was said before and after the edited section.""

Thomas opened his laptop.

"There's another issue.""

He turned the screen toward Rachel.

It showed a medical appointment request submitted under my name.

Rachel studied it.

"Who authorized this?""

"Daniel Whitmore," Thomas replied.

I shook my head.

"I never gave him permission.""

Rachel looked at me.

"Did you ever sign a general medical authorization form?""

I thought about it.

"Possibly. Vanessa asked me to sign some paperwork when I had a minor procedure last year.""

"What paperwork?""

"She said it was for insurance and hospital records.""

Rachel wrote something down.

"Do you remember reading it?""

"No. I trusted her.""

Rachel exchanged a look with Thomas.

"Then we need to obtain that document immediately.""

I felt sick.

Another moment of misplaced trust.

Another opportunity I'd handed them.

"Rachel, can I ask you something?""

"Certainly.""

"If they succeed, what happens to me?""

She leaned forward.

"If a court appoints a guardian, your rights and the guardian's powers will depend on the court's order. But your financial decisions could be restricted, and someone else might gain authority over significant parts of your life.""

"Could I lose my house?""

"Potentially, if the order grants sufficient authority and the appropriate legal procedures are followed. That's why we need to act before any fraudulent petition moves forward.""

I looked down at my hands.

I wasn't afraid of losing the money.

I was afraid of losing my freedom.

Of waking up one morning and discovering that my own son had become the person deciding where I could live, what I could spend, and whom I could see.

Rachel placed a hand on the table.

"We're going to challenge anything they submit. But I also want you to undergo an independent medical evaluation.""

I looked at her sharply.

"Why should I have to prove I'm sane?""

"You shouldn't have to prove anything merely because your family makes accusations. But an independent evaluation can protect you from false claims and establish a clear record of your actual capacity.""

I nodded slowly.

"All right.""

Thomas closed the laptop.

"There's something else we need to discuss.""

He removed a document from his briefcase.

It was a bank transaction summary.

Several withdrawals had been made from an account I rarely used.

I frowned.

"That's my household reserve account.""

Thomas nodded.

"Six transactions over the last four months.""

I examined the figures.

$18,000.

$24,500.

$12,000.

$31,000.

$16,500.

$22,000.

The total was $124,000.

"Thomas, I didn't make these withdrawals.""

"We know.""

Rachel leaned closer.

"Where did the money go?""

Thomas pointed to the receiving account.

"An investment company registered in Delaware.""

"Whose company?""

He looked at me.

"Vanessa's.""

I felt a wave of nausea.

"How could she access my account?""

Thomas opened another page.

A power-of-attorney authorization had been submitted electronically.

The document appeared to carry my signature.

I stared at it.

It looked like mine.

Almost.

But the final stroke of the E was wrong.

I had a habit of finishing my signature with a long horizontal line.

This one ended abruptly.

"That's not my signature," I whispered.

Rachel photographed the document.

"Don't worry about proving that today. We'll request the original electronic records and investigate the submission.""

I looked at Thomas.

"How much have they taken?""

"At least $124,000 from this account. We're still checking the other accounts.""

I stood up and walked to the window.

Outside, a delivery truck stopped at the house across the street.

A man carried a package to the front porch.

Everything looked so normal.

How could my life have become this?

My phone vibrated.

A message from Madison.

*MADISON: Grandma, I'm sorry. I found the recording. Mom keeps it on her laptop. I think she wants to show it to the lawyer next week.*

I immediately replied.

*ME: What does the recording show?*

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally, she sent a message.

*MADISON: It shows you saying you don't know where you are and that you want to give away all your money. But Grandma, I remember that day. You weren't confused.*

I stared at the screen.

I remembered that day, too.

It was in November.

Vanessa had invited me to Daniel's house for lunch.

Afterward, she had suggested we open a bottle of wine in the kitchen.

I'd refused because I was driving.

She had insisted on making me a cup of herbal tea instead.

We'd talked for perhaps twenty minutes.

At one point, she'd asked me whether I remembered where Robert kept his old property documents.

I'd told her I couldn't remember.

That was true.

Robert had moved them years earlier.

Now I wondered whether she'd been recording me.

I typed another message.

*ME: Can you send me a copy?*

Madison replied almost immediately.

*MADISON: I can't. Mom is home. But I took a picture of the file name.*

An image arrived.

It showed a laptop screen with a folder open.

The filename was:

*ELEANOR_CAPACITY_EVIDENCE_FINAL.mp4*

Below it were three other files.

One was dated November 18.

Another November 21.

The last one was dated December 2.

I showed the image to Thomas and Rachel.

Rachel leaned forward.

"These dates are important. We need to establish whether the files are original recordings or edited versions.""

Thomas studied the screen.

"Look at the folder name.""

I frowned.

"What about it?""

He pointed to the final file.

"Eleanor, that recording was supposedly made before your Christmas gift incident.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

"But look at the date of the last modified entry.""

I leaned closer.

December 24.

Christmas Eve.

The very night Madison threw my gift into the fireplace.

Someone had modified the recording that night.

I felt my blood run cold.

"Why would they edit it on Christmas Eve?""

Rachel answered carefully.

"Perhaps they were preparing evidence for an imminent filing.""

Thomas scrolled down.

There was another file in the same folder.

It wasn't a video.

It was a PDF.

The title read:

*GUARDIANSHIP PETITION — FINAL DRAFT.*

Rachel took a photograph of the screen.

Then her expression changed.

"Thomas, look at the filing date.""

He leaned closer.

December 28.

I checked the calendar.

It was December 27.

"They're filing tomorrow?"" I whispered.

Rachel nodded.

"That's what this appears to indicate.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Can they do that without telling me?""

"They can attempt to file a petition, but you will have legal rights to notice and an opportunity to respond. We need to prepare immediately.""

My phone vibrated again.

This time it was a call.

Daniel.

I looked at Thomas.

He gestured for me to answer, then placed his finger against his lips.

I put the call on speaker.

"Hello, Daniel.""

"Mom, where are you?""

"At home.""

"Good. Vanessa and I want to stop by tonight.""

"Why?""

"We have some papers for you to sign. Just routine family documents.""

I glanced at Rachel.

She shook her head firmly.

"What papers?""

Daniel sighed.

"Mom, don't make this difficult. It's just a temporary financial authorization. It will make things easier for everyone.""

"I thought you were already handling everything.""

"Exactly. So let's make it official.""

I took a slow breath.

"Daniel, I have a question.""

"What?""

"Did you alter a recording of me?""

Silence.

Then a sharp breath.

"What are you talking about?""

"The recording Vanessa has on her laptop.""

I heard a muffled voice in the background.

Vanessa.

"What did she say?""

Daniel moved away from the phone, but I could still hear him.

"She knows about the recording.""

Then Vanessa spoke clearly.

"Tell her the appointment is tomorrow. If she refuses, we'll use the recording anyway.""

My heart hammered.

Daniel returned to the phone.

"Mom, listen to me. You need to stop talking to Thomas. He's filling your head with nonsense.""

I looked at Rachel.

She was writing something down.

"Daniel, I know about the money you took from your father.""

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

"You don't understand what happened.""

"Then explain it.""

"Not over the phone.""

"Why not?""

"Because there are things you don't know about Dad.""

My stomach tightened.

"What things?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Mom, Dad wasn't the man you think he was. And if you keep digging into his old business records, you're going to discover something that could destroy this entire family.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Thomas slowly closed his laptop.

Rachel looked at me.

"Eleanor, what do you think your son meant?""

I looked toward Robert's empty chair.

For years, I had believed my husband had hidden the trust to protect me from Daniel.

Now I was beginning to wonder whether there was something else.

Something Robert had discovered.

Something so serious that even after his death, Daniel was still terrified of it.

Then my phone received one final message.

It was from Madison.

*GRANDMA, I FOUND ANOTHER VIDEO. THIS ONE ISN'T ABOUT YOU. IT'S ABOUT GRANDPA. AND MOM JUST REALIZED I'VE SEEN IT.*

A second message appeared.

*PLEASE DON'T TELL HER I SENT THIS.*

Then a photograph arrived.

It showed Robert sitting behind his desk, looking directly into the camera.

And beneath the image was a date.

*January 14, 2020.*

May you like

But Robert had died in 2022.

Why had my husband secretly recorded a video about our son—and why was Vanessa so desperate to keep it hidden?
