Chapter 3: The Daughter-in-Law's Christmas Confession
I drove home in silence.
The winter sky hung low over the highway, and dirty snow lined the edges of the road.
Every few minutes, I glanced at the passenger seat.
The folder Thomas had given me sat there.
I couldn't stop thinking about Madison's name on that document.
I'd held her when she was born.
I'd paid for her first ballet lessons, her braces, her summer camps, and the expensive private school Vanessa insisted was necessary.
When Madison was eleven, she'd broken her arm during a riding lesson.
I had spent three nights sleeping in a hospital chair beside her because Daniel and Vanessa were traveling in Europe.
When she turned sixteen, I bought her a used Mercedes because she wanted a car that was safe.
And now she was apparently prepared to tell a court that I was losing my mind.
I pulled into my driveway just after noon.
Daniel's SUV was parked outside.
My stomach tightened.
I hadn't told him I was coming home early.
When I opened the front door, I heard Vanessa's voice coming from the living room.
"She'll sign eventually. You just have to stop making her suspicious.""
Daniel answered quietly.
"What if she finds out?""
"Finds out what? You think she'll understand the paperwork? Eleanor trusts you. Use that.""
I froze.
Then Vanessa laughed.
"Besides, she's seventy-two. She can't manage eighteen million dollars forever.""
I stepped into the room.
"Apparently, I can still manage to walk through my own front door.""
Both of them turned.
Vanessa nearly dropped her phone.
Daniel stood up.
"Mom! You're home early.""
"Clearly.""
I looked at the documents spread across my coffee table.
Daniel hurried to gather them.
"What are you doing?"" I asked.
"Nothing. Just some family paperwork.""
"Interesting. I thought family paperwork usually involved everyone in the family.""
Vanessa recovered quickly.
She placed her phone on the table and smiled.
"You're being dramatic, Eleanor. We were discussing your estate planning.""
"My estate planning?""
"Yes," Daniel said.
"You know, making sure everything is organized.""
I removed my coat.
"Then perhaps you can explain why I found a guardianship petition with your name on it.""
Daniel went pale.
Vanessa's expression changed.
Only for a second.
Then she laughed.
"Where did you get that?""
"Does it matter?""
"Of course it matters. Those documents are confidential.""
I looked at her.
"Confidential from whom? The woman whose name is written on every page?""
Daniel moved toward me.
"Mom, please. Sit down. Let's talk calmly.""
I didn't sit.
"Did you request my medical records?""
He glanced at Vanessa.
That glance told me everything.
"Daniel?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"We were just worried about you.""
"About me?""
"You're getting older. Sometimes you forget things.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Like what?""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Last month, you called me three times in one afternoon asking about the same dinner reservation.""
"Because you changed the time twice.""
"And you forgot!""
"I forgot nothing.""
Daniel raised his hands.
"Mom, that's exactly what we're talking about. You're getting defensive.""
I stared at him.
"Defensive? My son is secretly preparing to have me declared mentally incompetent, and I'm supposed to be cheerful about it?""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Nobody is trying to hurt you.""
"Then why did you write that I was making irrational financial decisions?""
Her face hardened.
"You have no idea how difficult it is dealing with your money.""
I stared at her.
"My money?""
"Yes, Eleanor. Your money. Everything has to go through you.
Every investment, every property, every decision. Daniel has a family. He has responsibilities.""
"Then he should earn enough to support them.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"That's unfair.""
I turned toward him.
"Is it? Your father and I worked for forty-five years to build this company. You chose to leave the business ten years ago because you wanted to start your own venture.
When that failed, I paid your debts. When your house was close to foreclosure, I helped you. When Madison needed tuition, I paid it.""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"Nobody forced you to do those things.""
The words landed harder than she probably intended.
I looked at her.
"No. I did them because I loved my family.""
She walked to the coffee table and picked up her handbag.
"Well, love doesn't mean you should control everyone's lives.""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Vanessa, stop.""
But she wasn't finished.
"You give Madison gifts, then expect everyone to worship you. You pay for things and hold them over our heads.""
I glanced at the fireplace.
"Speaking of gifts, how did Madison know the Christmas box was worthless?""
Vanessa's face went still.
"What?""
"She threw it into the fire without opening it. She said it was probably twenty dollars. How did she know?""
Daniel looked away.
Vanessa let out a short laugh.
"Because it looked cheap.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
"Maybe Madison just didn't want it.""
"Did you tell her to throw it away?""
"Don't be ridiculous.""
I stepped closer.
"Did you know what was inside?""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely angry.
"Even if I did, what difference would it make? You shouldn't be giving an eighteen-year-old girl a hundred thousand dollars without discussing it with her parents.""
The room went silent.
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
There it was.
She knew.
I had never told her the amount.
I turned slowly toward Daniel.
"How did your wife know?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Mom, maybe we should—"
"How did she know?""
Vanessa snatched her handbag from the table.
"Because Madison deserves to know what kind of money she's being promised. You have no idea what you're doing to that girl.""
I stared at her.
"The check was burned. The money is gone.""
"Then perhaps you should have been more careful.""
She walked toward the hallway.
I watched her go.
Daniel remained standing beside the sofa.
"Mom, please don't make this worse.""
I looked at my son.
"Tell me the truth. Did you know they were preparing a guardianship petition?""
He rubbed his face.
"I was trying to protect the family.""
"From what?""
"From you making decisions that affect everyone.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Robert and I built that company. Why would my decisions be anyone else's problem?""
"Because we're your family!""
"And I'm still alive, Daniel.""
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he said quietly, "You won't always be.""
I felt something inside me go cold.
He walked out without another word.
I stood alone in the living room.
The Christmas tree lights blinked softly.
A few moments later, my phone rang.
It was Thomas.
"Eleanor, I've received something important.""
"What is it?""
"We've traced the request for your medical records. It wasn't just made by Vanessa.""
I gripped the phone.
"Who else was involved?""
"Someone at a private clinic has confirmed that a preliminary cognitive assessment was already scheduled for you.""
"I never made an appointment.""
"I know.""
"Then who did?""
Thomas hesitated.
"Your son used a signed authorization form.""
I closed my eyes.
"I never signed anything.""
"That's what I was afraid of.""
He continued.
"Eleanor, I need you to come back to my office tomorrow. There's something else you need to see. It's a document connected to your husband's estate.""
"My husband's estate?""
"Yes. And I believe it explains why Daniel and Vanessa are so desperate to gain control of your finances.""
I sat down slowly.
"What document?""
Thomas lowered his voice.
"Your husband left a separate trust agreement. One that was never included in the ordinary inheritance paperwork.""
I felt a chill move through me.
"What does it say?""
Thomas paused.
"It contains a clause that could change everything about who ultimately inherits Whitmore Properties.""
Before I could ask another question, he added:
"And Eleanor, there's a reason your son has been trying to get you declared incompetent before the end of this year.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Thomas, what reason?""
His answer was almost a whisper.
"Because if you lose legal control of your estate before December thirty-first, Daniel may gain access to something your husband specifically designed to keep out of his hands.""
I looked toward the staircase.
Then toward the family photographs hanging along the wall.
May you like
And for the first time in my life, I wondered whether Robert had known something about our son that I had refused to see.
*What exactly had my husband hidden in that trust—and why was Daniel so desperate to get it before New Year's Eve?*
