Chapter 9: The Message Daniel Left

I didn’t turn on Daniel’s phone immediately.

I was afraid.

Not of what I would find.

Of what I would lose.

Because Daniel’s voice had been gone for six months.

And hearing from him again might break me.

But I needed answers.

I unlocked the phone.

The password was simple.

Our wedding date.

Of course it was.

The screen opened.

Hundreds of memories appeared.

Photos.

Messages.

Videos.

Our life.

A life that ended too soon.

Michael sat quietly beside me.

“Go to the messages.””

I searched his name.

My heart stopped when I found the final conversation.

*Michael.*

The last message from Daniel was sent at 11:47 p.m.

Only twenty minutes before the crash.

I opened it.

Dad, if something happens tonight, take care of Claire and the baby.

My hands began shaking.

The next message:

I found proof.

Then:

Victor knows.

Then nothing.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just silence.

I covered my mouth.

“He knew.””

Michael nodded.

“He called me that night.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled.

“Because Daniel made me promise.””

I looked at him.

“He made you promise to hide this?””

“He wanted you safe.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Michael looked hurt.

“I know.””

I looked back at the phone.

“What proof?””

Michael hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“Daniel said he would explain after he confirmed everything.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Even at the end, Daniel was trying to protect everyone.

Including people who didn’t deserve it.

My phone rang.

James.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Claire, we found something.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

“We reviewed Victor’s filing.””

“And?””

“He submitted documents from the fertility clinic.””

I froze.

“What documents?””

“Records showing Daniel’s genetic material.””

I looked at Lily.

“What does he want with those?””

James paused.

“He’s claiming Daniel never legally authorized the use of his genetic material.””

I felt sick.

“He’s trying to say Lily isn’t legally Daniel’s daughter?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“But that’s impossible.””

“Claire, listen.””

His voice was serious.

“He’s using a technical argument.””

I looked at Michael.

“What argument?””

“That Daniel was not alive to sign the final confirmation paperwork.””

My stomach dropped.

The same documents that proved Daniel was Lily’s father…

Could now be twisted against us.

That evening, my parents called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

Mom’s voice came through.

“We heard about Victor.””

I stayed silent.

She continued.

“You need our help.””

I almost laughed.

“My help?””

“Yes.””

“Mom, when I needed you, you told me to clean the floor while I was in labor.””

Silence.

Then:

“I made a mistake.””

The words shocked me.

A real apology.

The first one.

But it was too late.

“Why now?””

“Because this man is dangerous.””

I looked at Lily.

“You mean now that someone else is hurting me, you finally believe me?””

Mom started crying.

“We were wrong.””

I wanted to forgive her.

A part of me still wanted my mother.

But trust wasn’t something you rebuilt with one sentence.

“Mom…”

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“We don’t deserve forgiveness.””

I closed my eyes.

For the first time, she sounded honest.

Then Dad spoke.

“Claire.””

I held the phone tighter.

“Yes?””

“We found something.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“Something Victor doesn’t know we have.””

I stood completely still.

“What is it?””

May you like

Dad took a breath.

“A recording.””
