Chapter 10: The Truth Comes Out

My father sent the recording that night.

I stared at the file for almost an hour before opening it.

Because I knew.

Whatever was inside would change everything.

Maybe my relationship with my parents.

Maybe the case.

Maybe the truth about Daniel.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then I heard a voice.

Victor.

My entire body went cold.

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””

A second voice answered.

My father.

“I’m not helping you take my granddaughter.””

I stopped breathing.

My father.

Talking to Victor.

Before tonight, I would have never imagined those words.

The recording continued.

Victor spoke.

“Your daughter is emotional. She’s easy to manipulate.””

Dad said nothing.

Victor continued.

“You just need to convince her that Daniel lied.””

My hands shook.

Then my father’s voice came through.

“She’s already been through enough.””

Victor laughed.

“You don’t understand how much money is involved.””

Money.

That was it.

Not concern.

Not family.

Money.

My mother’s voice appeared.

“She won’t believe us.””

Victor replied:

“She doesn’t have to believe. She just has to doubt.””

I stopped the recording.

The room was silent.

Michael looked at me.

“Claire…”

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The questions.

The accusations.

The way they dismissed every document.

They hadn’t discovered a problem.

They had been influenced.

Used.

My phone rang.

Dad.

I answered.

Neither of us spoke for several seconds.

Finally, he said:

“You heard it.””

“Yes.””

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at Lily.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“Then why were you helping him?””

Dad’s voice cracked.

“I thought he was protecting us.””

I closed my eyes.

“You believed a stranger over your own daughter.””

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“I know what I did.””

For once, I heard regret.

Real regret.

But regret didn’t erase damage.

“What happens now?””

Dad whispered.

“I want to fix it.””

I looked at the documents.

The recordings.

The evidence.

“Then tell the truth.””

“I will.””

The next morning, James filed the recording with the court.

Victor’s confidence disappeared almost immediately.

But he wasn’t finished.

During the hearing, he sat across from me.

Still smiling.

Still calm.

Until the judge asked one question.

“Mr. Hale, why did you discuss pressuring Claire Morgan before filing this claim?””

Victor’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

The first crack.

His attorney objected.

The judge denied it.

The recording was admitted.

And suddenly, the man who thought he controlled everything was losing control.

After the hearing, Victor approached me.

“You think you won.””

I held Lily closer.

“No.””

He smiled.

“This isn’t over.””

I looked at him.

“Yes, it is.””

He laughed.

“You really believe that?””

I stepped closer.

“My daughter has something you never had.””

His smile faded.

“What?””

“People who love her.””

For the first time, Victor looked uncertain.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from James.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*We found the missing evidence Daniel left behind.*

I looked at the message.

Then at Victor.

Because suddenly I understood.

Daniel hadn’t just prepared for a fight.

He had prepared to win.

And the final piece of the truth…

Was still waiting.
