Chapter 4: The Lie They Built

The next morning, I watched the sunrise through the hospital window.

Lily slept beside me.

Small.

Perfect.

Completely unaware that adults were already fighting over her life.

I hated that.

I hated that before she even opened her eyes to the world, someone had decided she needed to be defended.

Michael stayed with me until noon.

He brought coffee.

He brought food.

But more importantly, he stayed.

Something my own parents had refused to do.

My attorney, James, arrived in the afternoon with a folder.

He placed it on the table.

“Claire, I want you to understand something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“This is not about whether your parents believe Daniel was the father.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“This is about control.””

He opened the folder.

“They know the trust is protected. They know Daniel planned carefully.””

I looked at the papers.

“Then why are they doing this?””

James looked uncomfortable.

“Because they believe they can pressure you.””

My hands curled into fists.

“For what?””

He hesitated.

“To give up your rights.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“They want Lily?””

“They want access. Influence. Control over the estate.””

I looked at my sleeping daughter.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

But it was stronger than anything I had said before.

“No one takes her from me.””

That evening, I finally answered my father’s call.

He didn’t apologize.

Not even once.

“Claire,” he said, “we need to talk.””

“No. You need to explain.””

Silence.

Then:

“You’re being manipulated.””

I almost laughed.

“By who?””

“By Daniel’s family.””

I looked at Michael sitting across the room.

“The only people helping me right now are Daniel’s family.””

Dad lowered his voice.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, you don’t.””

His confidence annoyed me.

“You refused to drive me to the hospital.””

“You were emotional.””

“You told me my daughter wasn’t your granddaughter.””

He said nothing.

That silence hurt more than anger.

Because it meant he knew.

“Dad,” I whispered, “how could you say that?””

Finally, he answered.

“We were trying to protect you.””

I closed my eyes.

“No. You were trying to protect yourselves.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Neither was burying my husband alone while my family questioned whether my baby was real.””

His breathing changed.

Then he said something that made me freeze.

“Your mother found something.””

“What?””

“She found Daniel’s old medical records.””

I sat up.

“What records?””

“She thinks they prove he couldn’t have children.””

The room went silent.

My eyes moved to Lily.

Impossible.

Daniel and I had gone through years of appointments.

Years of waiting.

Years of hoping.

But there was something I had never known.

“What are you talking about?””

Dad hesitated.

“She has proof.””

My heart started pounding.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“Dad.””

“She said she would show you when you’re ready to admit the truth.””

I felt sick.

Because suddenly I remembered something.

A conversation Daniel had with me months before the accident.

A conversation I had forgotten.

He had told me he had a surprise.

Something important.

Something he wanted to tell me after the baby was born.

I thought it was about the nursery.

I thought it was about a gift.

But now…

I wasn’t sure.

I looked at Michael.

“Did Daniel ever tell you he had medical records?””

Michael’s face changed.

Slowly.

Like he already knew the answer.

“Claire…”

“What?””

He looked down.

“There’s something I should have told you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Michael reached into his bag.

May you like

And pulled out another envelope.

“This came from Daniel’s doctor.””
