Chapter 14: The Daughter Before Lily

I didn’t sleep that night.

The phone call replayed in my mind.

Every word.

Every pause.

Every possibility.

Daniel.

A daughter.

Before me.

I wanted to believe it was a mistake.

A lie.

Another attack.

But something about Sarah’s voice bothered me.

She didn’t sound like Victor.

She sounded sad.

The next morning, I met her at a quiet coffee shop.

She arrived carrying a folder.

Not a weapon.

Not an accusation.

Just papers.

“I know this is difficult.””

I stared at her.

“You think?””

She nodded.

“You have every right to be angry.””

I looked at the folder.

“Why are you here?””

She opened it.

Inside were photographs.

A little girl.

Brown hair.

A familiar smile.

My heart tightened.

“She’s eight.””

I looked up.

“Her name is Emma.””

Sarah swallowed.

“Daniel loved her.””

I felt a painful mixture of emotions.

Anger.

Confusion.

Grief.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Sarah looked down.

“Because he was afraid.””

“Afraid of me?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Afraid of losing her.””

I didn’t understand.

Sarah explained.

“When Daniel and I separated, there were legal issues. He fought for custody. He eventually became part of Emma’s life again.””

I stared at the pictures.

“So why hide her?””

“He didn’t.””

That answer surprised me.

“He told you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Sarah looked confused.

“Daniel said he told you about Emma.””

I searched my memory.

And then I remembered.

A conversation.

Early in our relationship.

Daniel had said:

“I have a complicated past.””

I had laughed.

“Don’t we all?””

I thought he meant his failed business.

His family issues.

His struggles.

I never imagined this.

Sarah continued.

“He wanted to introduce you properly after everything was settled.””

My eyes filled.

“After Lily was born.””

She nodded.

“He wanted Emma to meet her sister.””

Sister.

The word hit me.

Because Lily had another person in this world.

Another piece of Daniel.

“Where is Emma now?””

Sarah smiled sadly.

“She knows about Lily.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She has been asking to meet her.””

My heart broke.

Because this wasn’t a betrayal.

It was grief finding another door.

Later that afternoon, I met Emma.

She stood beside Sarah, nervous.

She looked at Lily for a long time.

Then she whispered:

“She’s tiny.””

I smiled.

“Yes.””

Emma smiled too.

“Dad said babies cry a lot.””

I swallowed.

“He was right.””

She laughed.

And for one second, I heard Daniel.

The same laugh.

The same warmth.

Emma looked at me.

“Did he love her?””

My throat tightened.

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

I looked at Lily.

“Because he spent every day protecting her before she was even born.””

Emma nodded.

“He did that for me too.””

And there it was.

The truth.

Daniel wasn’t divided.

He had enough love for both of them.

That evening, I showed Emma the nursery.

She touched the stuffed rabbit.

“Dad bought that?””

I nodded.

“He said it was too big for a baby.””

Emma laughed.

“That sounds like him.””

For the first time, I didn’t feel like Daniel’s past was something competing with my future.

It was part of it.

But later that night, Sarah called.

Her voice sounded worried.

“Claire?””

“Yes?””

“There’s something else.””

My heart sank.

“What now?””

She hesitated.

“Daniel left something for Emma too.””

I sat down.

“What?””

“A letter.””

I felt a chill.

“Where is it?””

Sarah answered softly:

“It was hidden with his other documents.””

I looked toward the nursery.

“Why didn’t you give it to her?””

“Because Daniel wrote instructions.””

“What instructions?””

A long pause.

May you like

Then:

“He said Emma should only read it when the whole truth about his death came out.””
