Chapter 3: The Family I Never Expected

I hadn’t seen Daniel’s father since the funeral.

Not because he didn’t care.

Because after Daniel died, everything became complicated.

His parents blamed themselves.

I blamed myself.

Everyone was grieving in different ways.

But when the nurse said his name, I felt something I hadn’t felt in months.

Relief.

“Send him in,” I whispered.

A few seconds later, the door opened.

Michael stood there holding his hat in both hands.

He looked older.

Much older.

The confident man who had walked Daniel down the aisle was gone.

In his place was a father who had lost his only son.

His eyes immediately went to the baby in my arms.

“Is that her?””

I smiled through tears.

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“Lily?””

I nodded.

He covered his mouth.

“She’s beautiful.””

The emotion in his voice almost destroyed me.

Because it was the reaction I had wanted from my own parents.

A simple moment of joy.

A simple “she’s beautiful.””

Michael sat beside the bed.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t here.””

I looked down.

“I thought you didn’t believe me.””

His face changed.

“What?””

I swallowed.

“Everyone kept saying Daniel wasn’t the father.””

His eyes filled with anger.

“Who said that?””

I looked away.

“My parents.””

Michael went quiet.

Then he reached into his jacket.

“I think you need to see something.””

He handed me a small envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Daniel’s handwriting.

My hands started shaking.

“Where did you get this?””

“He mailed it to me two weeks before the accident.””

I stared at the page.

Michael watched me carefully.

“Daniel knew he might not always be there.””

I unfolded the letter.

My eyes moved over his words.

**Dad, if you’re reading this, it means I didn’t get enough time. Please protect Claire and our daughter. Some people may question her.

Some people may try to take away her peace. Don’t let them.**

I covered my mouth.

“He knew.””

Michael nodded.

“He knew your parents had doubts.””

My head lifted.

“How?””

“Because he heard them.””

I froze.

“What?””

Michael sighed.

“Claire, Daniel came to me before he died. He was worried.””

“Worried about what?””

He looked at Lily.

“About your family.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“What did he say?””

Michael leaned forward.

“He said your mother had been asking questions about whether the baby was really his. He said your father told him that if anything happened to him, they would challenge you.””

My stomach dropped.

“They knew?””

“Yes.””

The pain was different now.

Before, I thought they were ignorant.

I thought they were scared.

But maybe they had chosen cruelty.

Maybe they had decided not to believe because believing would mean admitting they were wrong.

Michael reached for my hand.

“Daniel didn’t want you to fight everyone after he was gone.””

I looked at Lily.

“I have been fighting.””

“I know.””

“He would hate that.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

He smiled sadly.

“He would hate that you ever thought you had to.””

For the first time since Daniel died, I allowed myself to breathe.

Because someone else knew.

Someone else had seen the truth.

Then my phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t Mom.

It was my attorney.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

“Claire, I’m sorry to call right after delivery.””

“What happened?””

There was a pause.

Then his voice became serious.

“The documents were delivered to your parents tonight.””

I sat up.

“What documents?””

“The legal notice regarding Daniel’s estate.””

My heart started racing.

“And?””

“And they’re claiming they have a right to challenge the trust.””

I looked at Lily sleeping peacefully.

Michael’s expression changed when he saw my face.

“What is it?”” he asked.

I lowered the phone.

“My parents are trying to take what Daniel left for our daughter.””

And then my attorney added one more sentence.

May you like

A sentence that made my blood run cold.

“Claire, your father says he has evidence that Daniel wasn’t Lily’s biological father.””
