Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Smile
Victor Hale looked exactly like the kind of man people trusted too quickly.
That was the first thing I noticed.
He wore an expensive suit.
He smiled at everyone.
He shook hands warmly.
And every part of me felt uneasy.
We met three days later at a legal conference room.
James sat beside me.
Michael sat behind us.
Victor entered alone.
“Claire,” he said, smiling.
I didn’t smile back.
“You know my name.””
“Of course.””
He sat across from me.
“I knew Daniel for many years.””
“Apparently.””
His smile faded slightly.
“Daniel was complicated.””
I stared at him.
“You mean successful?””
He chuckled.
“No. I mean secretive.””
James interrupted.
“Mr. Hale, let’s stay focused.””
Victor leaned back.
“I simply want what is best for the child.””
I almost laughed.
“You’ve never met her.””
“That doesn’t mean I don’t care.””
I looked at him.
“You’re asking for custody of a newborn you’ve never seen?””
“I’m asking for protection.””
“From who?””
He looked directly at me.
“From someone who may have lied about her origins.””
My hands tightened.
“You mean me.””
“I mean the situation.””
James pushed a folder forward.
“Your claim has no evidence.””
Victor smiled.
“Not yet.””
That answer bothered me.
Not because it was threatening.
Because it sounded prepared.
After the meeting, I asked James:
“What was that?””
He looked concerned.
“He’s dangerous.””
“Because he’s rich?””
“No.””
James looked at me.
“Because he believes he’s smarter than everyone.””
That night, I barely slept.
I kept thinking about Daniel.
About the warning in his letter.
About Victor knowing about Lily.
At 2:13 a.m., my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I saw the message.
*You should have left the past alone.*
My blood ran cold.
A second message arrived.
*Daniel couldn’t protect you forever.*
I sat up.
I took screenshots.
Then another message appeared.
*Ask Michael what really happened the night Daniel died.*
I stared at those words.
The room felt suddenly smaller.
Because there was one thing I had never questioned.
Daniel’s death.
A drunk driver.
A tragic accident.
That was what everyone told me.
But now…
I wasn’t sure.
The next morning, I found Michael sitting outside the hospital.
He looked exhausted.
Like he had been waiting.
“I got your message,” I said.
He looked away.
“Then you know.””
My heart sank.
“You knew something?””
Michael closed his eyes.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You need to tell me.””
He looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“Daniel wasn’t just worried about Victor.””
“What else?””
Michael swallowed.
“He was investigating him.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel believed the accident wasn’t an accident.””
The world stopped.
I couldn’t speak.
“You’re saying someone killed my husband?””
Michael looked devastated.
“I’m saying Daniel was afraid someone would try.””
I looked down at Lily.
My daughter.
The child Daniel died trying to protect.
And suddenly, the fight wasn’t about inheritance.
It wasn’t about my parents.
It wasn’t even about proving Daniel was her father.
It was about something much darker.
Something that had started before Lily was born.
Michael reached into his pocket.
“I should have given you this sooner.””
He handed me Daniel’s old phone.
My hands shook.
“Why do you have this?””
“Because Daniel sent me one final message.””
I looked at him.
May you like
“When?””
“The night he died.””
