Chapter 8: The First Daughter

I drove to Rachel’s house faster than I should have.

Mason sat beside me, staring silently out the window.

Neither of us spoke.

Because we both understood something had changed.

Vanessa wasn’t just defending herself anymore.

She was trying to scare us.

When Rachel opened the door, she immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

She looked at the picture.

The color disappeared from her face.

“She found you.””

“What does that mean?””

Rachel stepped aside.

“Come in.””

The moment the door closed, I turned toward her.

“You knew she was capable of this.””

Rachel looked down.

“Yes.””

“You knew she watched people.””

“Yes.””

My anger rose.

“Why didn’t you warn me?””

“Because I thought if I stayed quiet, she wouldn’t know I was helping you.””

I stared at her.

“She knows now.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“I know.””

Mason stepped forward.

“Tell him about Emily.””

Rachel looked at him.

The pain in her eyes told me she knew that name mattered.

“Emily was Vanessa’s daughter.””

I nodded.

“I know she died.””

Rachel sat down.

“You don’t know how.””

The room went silent.

“Tell me.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Emily was six years old. She was a sweet girl. Quiet. Creative.””

She looked at Mason.

“She reminded me of Lily.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

“Vanessa believed Emily was becoming too independent.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She thought children needed strict control.””

Rachel looked at the floor.

“Vanessa believed love meant shaping someone into what you wanted.””

“That’s not love.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“It isn’t.””

Mason looked away.

“What happened to Emily?””

Rachel was quiet for a moment.

“Emily got sick.””

“With what?””

“A fever.””

I waited.

“And Vanessa refused to take her to the doctor immediately.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“She thought Emily was pretending.””

The room went still.

“How long?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Too long.””

I felt sick.

“She blamed herself afterward.””

“She should have.””

Rachel looked at me.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“She became obsessed with fixing the past.””

I whispered:

“By controlling Lily.””

Rachel nodded.

“She convinced herself Lily was a second chance.””

I looked at Mason.

“And Mason?””

Rachel’s expression softened.

“Mason reminded her of everything she hated about herself.””

“What does that mean?””

“She saw Emily’s fear in him.””

I felt a chill.

“So she punished him for surviving?””

Rachel nodded.

“She punished him because he was proof she failed.””

My fists tightened.

A mother who couldn’t face her own guilt had decided to make everyone else suffer.

My phone rang.

Claire.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Michael, I need you to come back to my office.””

“Why?””

“There’s something you need to see.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Your wife submitted additional evidence.””

My stomach dropped.

“What kind?””

“Medical records.””

I looked at Rachel.

“Whose?””

Claire lowered her voice.

“Lily’s.””

I felt cold.

“What records?””

“Records showing injuries.””

I couldn’t speak.

“What?””

“She’s claiming Lily has been injured because of neglect in your home.””

My mind went blank.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because she’s building a case.””

I looked at Rachel.

Then at Mason.

Vanessa wasn’t just trying to win custody.

She was trying to make me lose everything.

At Claire’s office, she placed a file on the table.

Inside were photographs.

I opened the first page.

My hands trembled.

A bruise.

A small mark on Lily’s arm.

Another picture.

A scratch.

Dates.

Descriptions.

My heart was pounding.

“Michael,” Claire said carefully.

I looked up.

“What?””

“These photos were taken by Vanessa.””

I stared.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Claire’s expression hardened.

“Because she wasn’t documenting abuse.””

She pushed another page toward me.

“She was creating a timeline.””

I looked closer.

The photos were arranged.

Every mark.

Every accident.

Every childhood injury.

Collected.

Saved.

Waiting.

“She planned this.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

I turned the page.

Then I saw something that made me stop.

A photo I recognized.

Lily’s red cheek.

The night I came home.

The night everything exploded.

But underneath the picture was a note.

Written by Vanessa.

My blood ran cold as I read it.

*Phase One complete. Father will react emotionally. Prepare Phase Two.*

I looked at Claire.

“She planned me hitting her.””

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly the worst part wasn’t that Vanessa lied.

May you like

It was that she knew exactly how I would respond.

And she had been waiting for me to make one mistake.
